“A group of us, including Kenton, are going to go out for drinks tonight,” Hannah tells me as we sit in the sauna of the fitness club we use.

“I’ll pass, thanks,” I reply, adjusting the towel around me.

Hannah, reclining on a wooden chair, sits up and looks at me. “You have other plans?”

“Maybe.”

Intrigued, she leans toward me. “Like what?”

I try not to smile too broadly. “I met someone.”

She furrows her brow. “A guy?”

I lean back against the wall without answering.

“Who?” Hannah presses.

“Jack.”

“Not Jack O’Bryan?”

“He’s definitely not an O’Anything.”

“Then who is this guy?”

“I doubt you’d know him.”

Maybe I shouldn’t have told Hannah my plans. What if she mentions it to her mom, who mentions it to mine, and then it gets to my dad? Shit.

“Look, don’t tell anyone,” I add. “Everyone’s so fixated on me getting together with Kenton.”

“Well, yeah, you two make such a hot couple.”

“Kenton’s not that interested in me.”

“Yes, he is. He got you that beautiful emerald bracelet for your birthday.”

I think about what Jack gave me for my birthday. I’d take that over an emerald bracelet any day.

“I’m not that interested in Kenton.”

Hannah looks at me like I’m crazy. “Did you hit your head? Maybe you took a bad fall while snowboarding once? Maybe you need glasses? Have you seen what Kenton looks like?”

I sigh. Hannah doesn’t get it.

“He’s just not my type, I guess,” I say, hoping that will end the conversation.

“So is this Jack of yours hotter and wealthier than Kenton?”

“Actually, he is. And on top of that, he’s sweet.”

She does a double take. “Sweet?”

“Yeah. We came across a stray, he helped it get untangled from some trash and went to get food for it. We then waited in the alley to see if it would come back.”

Hannah wrinkles her nose. “The guy made you stand in a trash filled alley for a cat?”
