Not wanting to go there again, Poppy ignored the macabre thought and instead focused on his question. “I’m not very hungry but thank you.”

“You need to eat so tell me what you want, and I’ll make sure you get it.”

“Are you always this bossy?” Poppy frowned, the movement reminding her of the tenderness in her left eye and cheek area.

“When I need to be, yes.”

“And you think you need to be bossy with me right now?”

“After what happened today? Absolutely.”

Well, you did ask the question.

“Your body’s been through a lot. All that adrenaline you had rushing through your system earlier is going to come to a blinding halt, and when it does, you’re going to crash. You’re in pain, and you need to take something for it, but if you take it on an empty stomach, it could make you feel sick. So I’ll ask again, what would you like to eat?”

Poppy stared up at him with a ball of conflicting emotions. On the one hand, his bossiness was over the top by anyone’s standards. But on the other, everything he said was one hundred percent true.

He’s trying to take care of you, Pop. Even more than he already has.

“Okay, fine.” She finally gave in. “How about…um…I don’t know. Maybe some soup?”

“Any particular kind?”

“My favorite is chicken and wild rice, but I don’t know if you can even find that anywhe—”

“Make yourself at home,” Jax cut her off as he went to the door. “I’ll let you know when your food’s here.”

And just like that, he left the room, quietly shutting the door behind him as he left.

Poppy stared at that closed door, even more confused than ever by the man who’d just vanished behind it.

With a shake of her head, she crossed her arms at her chest and looked around the room again. The same modern theme had been carried throughout, but this room was darker. Almost cozy.

The walls were a dark gray, the furniture black. The king size bed in front of her was rested against a stationary headboard made of some sort of dark stained wood.

The bedding was all white, the overstuffed down comforter and pillows practically calling her name. But Poppy found herself drawn to the window to the bed’s left, so she went to it and slid the black curtain over just a smidge.

The view wasn’t overly spectacular, mainly other buildings and houses with a few scattered trees in between. Looking down, Poppy realized the room sat high above the alley that ran behind Sin.

The same alley where she’d seen the car with the plastic lined trunk.

Turning her head to the left, Poppy nearly pressed her cheek against the window’s cool glass as she tried to see the spot where that car had been. She was too far away and the edge of the building she was in obstructed her view.

She released a loud sigh. Letting the curtains fall back into their rightful place, she went to one of the two bags and carried it to the bed. Pulling the zipper free, she grabbed her small toiletry bag and a clean set of clothes and made her way to the bathroom.

Not surprising, the space was just as luxurious as the rest of Jax’s apartment. Modern fixtures, white marble floors, and the shower…

Holy moly!

Twice the size of a typical shower, this one had a large glass door that opened to a little piece of heaven. Both the left and right walls, as well as the floor, were made of a dark gray and white swirled tile which looked to be very expensive. But it was the back wall that had immediately caught Poppy’s attention.

Not keeping with the same type of tile, it was comprised of rough, uneven rock. Though she’d never seen one in real life, the wall reminded Poppy of what might be hidden behind a waterfall somewhere deep in the jungle.

And speaking of water…

With both the left and right walls free of any sort of nozzle or shower head, she looked up and found not one but two rectangular recessed waterfall shower heads. Clearly Jax had spared no expense on the rebuild, and in that moment, Poppy couldn’t have been more grateful.

After a quick search for the buttons to start the shower—and a self-led tutorial because lordy, she’d never used a shower so fancy before—she started the water so it could get warmed up and ready for her.
