“Oh, yes. He’s fine, recovering from a broken leg.”

“That’s good.”

She nods. “He reached out just about every day, and your team from the Smokejumper base and the guys from the local station have been in and out, visiting. They’ll be thrilled to know you’re awake.

My fingers caress her skin. “The nurse told me just now that you’ve been here every day, but she didn’t need to. I knew.”

“How do you know?”

“I heard your voice. I felt like I was caught up in a strange dream, hearing you but unable to answer.” I frown. “Did you argue with your sister, or was that really a dream?”

She laughs. “I think that was the night she barged in here and forced me to take a break from this recliner.”

My heart contracts at the knowledge she didn’t leave my side. I squeeze her hand to thank her because I think the pain meds are kicking. It’s hard to speak, let alone keep my eyes open.

“So, what else did I miss?” I ask drowsily.

She launches into details, and I fall asleep with the sound of her voice wrapped around me.

Chapter 10

Rowan

Two months later...

I hate being helpless. I’m out of the hospital, but I’m still stuck sitting on my ass. Immobility isn’t something I can ever get used to, which means my irritability is out of control. It makes me feel terrible for Grace. She’s the one here with me every day, putting up with my attitude.

Taking a deep breath, I shuffle on the recliner I’ve practically lived in for days. I need to walk around a bit, or I’ll completely lose it. Before my feet touch the hardwood, though, Grace comes running down the stairs.

“Rowan, what are you doing? Sit back down.”

She’s carrying her laptop, so I guess she has classes this morning. The communication between us has been minimal, which is mostly my fault. I’ve been snapping at everyone at the drop of a hat.

“It’s been eight weeks, Grace. I’m fine. I won’t keel over from a little exercise. That’s why I’ve got this annoying back brace on.” I swear, I’m going to burn the thing when I’m done with it.

She backs off with a nod. “Yeah, you’re right. I’m just still so paranoid. I’m being ridiculous.” Rubbing her eyes, which look a little red and puffy, she gives me one of those forced smiles. “The nurse will be here soon. I have classes until one, but I’m coming home right after.”
