“That’s an understatement,” she mumbled, rubbing at her eyes.

“You can have my bed. Bedroom’s through here,” he said, standing up.

“What?” Piper looked dazed as he opened the door to his bedroom. She stared at the bed for a few moments. “I can’t possibly take the bed. I’m fine sleeping on the sofa.”

“I insist.” Grizzly made sure his tone brooked no argument. She gave him a wary look, then nodded.

“Thank you,” she said softly.“Then, good night.”

Grizzly chuckled to himself when he heard a click from inside. Yeah, there was no way she was leaving the apartment without him noticing.

Piper couldn’t get a wink of sleep that night. No surprise there because she kept picturing Mervin’s corpse, bleeding out on that dirty motel carpeting. It bothered her that what she felt was relief, not grief or sorrow.

Piper knew that with the way he was going, Mervin would dig his own grave sooner or later. Hell, it angered her that even after he died, he had to drag her down.

She thought of the Grizzly, sleeping out there in the living room. The tattooed and muscled biker had so many complicated layers to him. She touched the hem of her borrowed dress, the one that had belonged to Grizzly’s dead wife.

Grizzly had a family once, but he lost them in a tragic accident. Was that why he seemed so gruff and ruthless at first glance?

Then he had to show her that unexpectedly tender side of his, and Piper found herself softening toward her—captor? Would she call Grizzly that? He referred to her as his guest, but was that all a lie so he could find out what she knew about Mervin’s operations?

Piper told Grizzly all she knew and left nothing out. What if he wasn’t satisfied with her answers? She thought of the blatant hunger in his eyes when he saw her wrapped in a towel. Recalling that stare made her hot all over. Piper moved her hand under the dress. She pinched one nipple, imagining it was Grizzly pinching both her tits.

Moisture appeared on her pussy lips. Piper imagined Grizzly above her, parting her legs and going down on her, his beard rough against the skin of her thighs. She started touching herself.

She kept her moans of pleasure muffled. Piper had ample practice keeping quiet, after all. Her father always received shady guests even in the late hours of the night. Piper learned from a young age to be invisible.

Even back then, she knew getting the unwanted attention of those guests would put her life in peril. She banished thoughts of her awful childhood and allowed herself to get lost in her erotic fantasy. It sure made her feel good, thinking about what or who she couldn’t have.

Grizzly might look at her like some kind of prize, but it would never happen. Men like him used women all the time and discarded them like trash afterward. He loved a woman once, cherished her enough to have a son with him, Piper reminded herself.

She saw herself, perched on his motorcycle while they traveled dusty roads during the day and crashing into bed-and-breakfasts during the night. AJust Marriedsign was attached to the back of Grizzly’s motorcycle.

Fantasies of a stupid girl. Of course that kind of future would never come. Grizzly killed her father. He was merely a dangerous stranger she needed to be free of. Still, dreaming never hurt anyone.

Piper expelled a sigh after she climaxed. Her entire body felt relaxed. She could fall asleep like this, with that ridiculous daydream still lingering in her mind. A knock on the door made her sit up.

“Everything okay in there? I heard sounds,” came Grizzly’s rough voice. He sure sounded wide awake. Of course, he needed to make sure she didn’t run.

Piper blushed furiously, glad a door separated them. Dang it. She couldn’t believe she just masturbated on his sheets. Didn’t she have any shame? What was wrong with her?Grief does strange things to people, she thought to herself. Maybe that explained her strange actions.

“Piper? If you don’t answer me, I’ll break this door down,” he said with a growl.

That didn’t sound good. Piper had no doubts he was capable of doing just that. Grizzly was built like a brick wall, and she bet all those muscles weren’t just for show.

“I’m fine,” she whispered.

“What was that?”

Was it Piper’s imagination or was there amusement in Grizzly’s voice? Cocky biker. Had he heard her after all? Nah, she shouldn’t overthink this. She needed to be in control of the situation.

“I’m okay. Go back to sleep,” she yelled.

Her heartbeats only slowed down after she heard his retreating footsteps.

“That was close,” she whispered to herself.
