“My father’s enemies would forget about me eventually?” she pressed.

Grizzly didn’t answer her, not right away. That worried her. Piper was about to repeat her question when there was a bang on the front door. She jumped in her seat, eyes wide. Grizzly automatically opened a drawer and pulled a gun out. Who stored a gun in their kitchen drawer? Not a normal person, that was for sure. She wouldn’t be too surprised if Grizzly kept weapons hidden everywhere in his apartment.

“Stay here. No one but my MC brothers know where I live, but it never hurts to be extra careful,” he told her.

Scared out of her wits, Piper nodded.“Okay,” she whispered.

The series of bangs came again. Grizzly looked out the peephole, instantly relaxing when he saw King there. Wait. What was the Prez doing outside his door this early in the morning? This wasn’t good news.

Then Grizzly remembered telling Gunner the day before that he didn’t care if Gunner ratted him out to King. Mayberatted outweren’t the right words to use. Gunner was only doing his job, after all.

It was Grizzly who went off script. The moment he saw Piper cowering on the bathroom floor of that sleazy motel room, all his defenses crumbled.

Taking a deep breath, Grizzly opened the door.

King looked him up and down, then crossed his arms. “Where’s the girl?” King outright asked.

“In the kitchen. We’re eating breakfast,” Grizzly said. Knowing they shouldn’t discuss this with the door opened, Grizzly took a few steps back. King entered the apartment and shut the door behind him.

King raised one eyebrow.“Breakfast? I thought you were supposed to question our prisoner.”

Prisoner? Did Gunner use that word to describe Piper? For some reason, that made Grizzly mad. Piper had already been through enough.

“Piper knows jack shit about her father’s operations. She just happens to have the same blood running her veins as Mervin did,” Grizzly pointed out.

“That’s what concerns me. Grizzly, you’re always level-headed, but this girl has got you wrapped around her little finger. You’ve only met her yesterday,” King reminded him.

“She didn’t cast a spell on me or anything,” Grizzly retorted. “King, how long have I been with the MC?”

“A long time,” King said with a laugh.

Hearing that laugh lightened his mood. Grizzly forced himself to calm down. King didn’t come here personally to interrogate Grizzly. Grizzly hadn’t done anything wrong. King probably just wanted to get a feel of Piper.

“Then you’d know the last thing I’d ever do is betray my family,” Grizzly said.

Piper must’ve overheard bits and pieces of their conversation because she appeared in the living room. “Grizzly didn’t do anything wrong,” she blurted.

Grizzly warmed at her words. They were practically strangers, and any woman in Piper’s position shouldn’t come running to defend the guy who killed her father, but Piper did just that.

“You’re Mervin’s daughter?” King asked, frowning. The Prez didn’t miss the fact Piper wore Ariana’s clothes. King narrowed his eyes.

“I am, and I’ve got nothing to do with my father’s activities,” she said, straightening her spine.

“She’s wearing Ariana’s clothes,” King said.

“I didn’t sleep with her, if that’s what you’re asking,” Grizzly said. He held King’s gaze for a few moments. King must’ve read the truth in Grizzly’s eyes because he nodded.

“Ask her yourself. Piper, you won’t mind if King here asks you some questions, will you?” Grizzly asked.

Piper fiddled with the hem of her dress, then asked Grizzly, “Will you be right next to me?”

Grizzly found it interesting that she felt safe with him. Maybe it was because he was the lesser evil compared to King? What Piper didn’t realize was that Grizzly was cut from the same cloth as King.

Grizzly had done plenty of things for the MC, and some of those deeds, he wasn’t particularly proud of. If he could reverse time, would he change anything? No, because Grizzly would do anything for his MC family.

“Okay then,” Piper said with a nod.
