Sarah had left Will in charge of the bakery while she went to Frosty’s Shack to pick up some lunch for the two of them. Usually they nibbled on pastries and coffee, but today both of them were feeling extra famished and Sarah had suggested she pick up some takeout. Will had offered to pay for it, but Sarah insisted she cover the bill—after all, he had done so much to bring new profits to Sweet Thing.

“Did Becca already take your order?” Louise asked, walking up to the lobby of Frosty’s and sticking a pencil through the bun she always wore at the nape of her neck.

“Yes, she’s letting the kitchen know what I ordered.”

“Good, good. She can be forgetful at times, but she’s a good girl.”

Sarah smiled. “Becca was very helpful. No problems here.”

Louise pursed her lips and nodded, but Sarah could tell that she was pleased at the simple praise. Just then, Sarah’s phone started vibrating in her pocket, signaling an incoming call. She fished it out and saw Michelle’s name flashing on the screen. Her heart leapt into her throat at the sight. Usually she was more than happy to catch up with her sister, but there was so much Michelle didn’t know… and she had no idea how Michelle would take Sarah’s confessions about Will.

“It’s my sister. I’m going to have to take this call, if that’s all right.”

Louise waved her away. “Of course. Tell Michelle hello for me,” she said, politely slipping away.

Sarah answered the call. “Michelle! Hi!” She took a silent breath, feeling how dry her mouth suddenly was. “Any news on your travel plans?”

“Whoa! Let a girl breathe,” Michelle replied, laughing on the other end of the line.

Sarah winced. She had started babbling since she was nervous.

“To answer your question, though, I think our travel plans are finally falling into place. Kyle and I should be able to make it into town pretty soon.”

“That’s great!” Sarah blurted, even as her stomach twisted.

“Yeah, it’s been such a headache trying to get it all worked out. I love New Hampshire, but the winter weather there can besucha drag sometimes.”

“I mean, that’s kind of what makes it perfect for Kyle’s skiing…”

“Okay, true. You got me there,” Michelle responded with a chuckle. “Anyway, enough about me. How are things going on your end?”

This was the moment. Sarah’s chest tightened with nerves, but she knew what she had to do.

“Where to begin…”

“Just pick one thing and start there.”

“Okay, well… Will Parks came into town for a visit. To see you.”

There was a beat of silence. “Will’s in town?”

Sarah nodded and then realized her sister couldn’t see her. “Yes, he’s been here for a couple of weeks.”

“That’s nice. I bet he’s enjoying the slopes. I remember he always loved to ski—I’ll have to introduce him to Kyle if Will’s still in town when I get there.”

Sarah was surprised at how blandly Michelle seemed to be taking the news. Maybe this wouldn’t be so bad after all?

Immediately her mind whispered,She won’t be so calm when you tell her you’re practically dating her high school sweetheart.

She gulped, knowing it was time to take the plunge.

“I’m sure he’d love to meet Kyle,” she said, her voice a bit strangled. “Michelle, there’s something you should know…”

“What is it? You’re making me nervous,” Michelle teased.

Sarah gulped again, finding it hard to breathe. “Well, Will’s been helping out at the bakery—I’ll explain that in a minute—so we’ve been spending a lot of time together, and… and we have feelings for each other and we’re going on a date soon.” Sarah blurted the last part out as fast as she could, her words running together.

Another beat of silence. “You and Will, huh?”
