Shaking her head, Avery looked over at her sister, "Okay, start by telling me what you know."
"He was gorgeous, but that wasn't all it was. He's caring and gentle, someone who just puts you at ease. We talked a lot. It surprised me, I mean I was attracted to him, which is what motivated me to invite him up, but I never would have thought the night would turn out how it did."
Avery cocked her head to the side and scrunched up her nose, "You didn't think you would sleep with a guy you invited up into your apartment?"
"I thought we would mess around a bit. I've picked up guys before, but I never slept with them, and we certainly didn't lay there in bed talking for hours. Avery, I fell asleep in his arms. It was amazing, but then I woke up this morning and he was gone."
"Andie, he wouldn't have stayed that long if he didn't like you too. Why didn't you ask for his number?"
"He is completely out of my league. He works at some big security company or something, and I'm one step away from being unemployed. He was so down to earth, he told me about his mom and a bit about his military career. I told him all about you and how we are all each other had since mom died. I shared with him things I hadn't talked about in years. I've not been that comfortable with anyone in a long time, but I was still too embarrassed to ask to see him again."
"I get it. I mean, we both are always hoping to find our Prince Charming, right? Maybe it's not hopeless. You should at least try to track him down. He didn't wake you up when he left?"
"No, and if he wanted to see me again, he would have left his number. This sucks. I can't believe I found such an amazing guy and slept with him the first day I met him. I know better than that, I don't know what I was thinking. Now, I'd rather track down a pint of Ben and Jerry's and watch sappy movies. This whole thing is so embarrassing."
Avery popped up from her bar stool, "Sounds like a wonderful afternoon, I'll grab the ice cream and you grab the remote!"
"This is why I love you. Best sister ever," Andie said as she made her way to the couch. Maybe an afternoon of sisterly bonding was just what she needed to forget about her beautiful green-eyed giant.
Chapter Five
Mikewassittingathis desk for over an hour just staring at a computer screen. He couldn't think straight. The only thing on his mind was Andie. Her soft skin, plump breasts, and the way she felt when he sank deep inside of her. He was hard as a rock from the memories that kept flashing through his mind. It killed him to leave her in bed so early in the morning, but the sun was rising, and he had learned it was never a good idea to be there when the one-night stand turned into the next morning. He had leaned over and gave her a kiss on her forehead while she slept, then quietly whispered his thanks without disturbing her. Which at the time he didn't realize was already a sign this wasn't a normal one-night stand. Usually he got up, left and didn't think twice about it.
There was something about her that just wasn't the same as the others. She was sweet and innocent. Not a virgin, but not experienced either. It made him want her even more. His desire to show her how to love her body and how to experience pleasure outweighed his common sense. Eventually she drifted off to sleep and he couldn't stop staring at her. He laid awake watching her until the sobering nature of the sun told him he had to get out of there. He was shocked she had invited him up; he didn't want her to regret her decision. She invited him up for coffee. Decaf, to be exact, as a thank you for the ride. Never in his life had a girl invited him up for coffee and made him coffee, but she did. Everything about her was confusing; she seemed young, and maybe that was it, but she was so inherently good it was surprising. He enjoyed being around her, so he agreed to coffee and hoped for more but had decided when he walked through her front door he wouldn't push her. Things progressed naturally between them and he felt like the luckiest man alive, having spent the night with her.
Now he needed to get his act together. It was almost seven and Jason had said he would be by today to review schedules. If he didn't concentrate, he would force him to work a bunch of events and that was the last thing he wanted. He and Jason were opposite in almost every way. Jason didn't function well before noon, and Mike barely slept.
The pain in his knee was unbearable today, so he popped a pain pill and called his assistant to bring him in a cup of coffee. He didn't normally like being that kind of boss, but he really didn't want to get up and walk around until his meds kicked in. His pain was a daily reminder of when his life fell apart, and the worse it got the more his anxiety would get to him. Memories of such a terrible time in his life always left him feeling uneasy. He was luckier than most, and beyond grateful for his business, but damn, did he miss his unit. Now he spent a great deal of time in the field, but he left the grunt work to the younger guys.
"Here you go, sir," his assistant said, as she bustled into his office.
"Stop calling me that."
"Why? That's what everyone else calls you around here," she smirked.
"That's because they work for me, Mom."
"Well, I work for you now. At least until you figure out how to hire someone who you won't run off. So, I will call you, sir."
She turned on her heel and darted out of his office. For an old lady, she sure moved fast.
He leaned his head back on his chair and thought about how much she would like Andie. As much as his mother smarted off at him, he was certain Andie could give her a run for her money. For such a little person, she had a lively personality that drew him in more than her looks. There was no doubt his mother would adore her. He shook his head, trying to clear his thoughts. Andie was just a random girl from a one-night stand. There was no way his mother would meet her. Instead of obsessing, he grabbed his phone and shot off a text to Jason to motivate him to get the day started. Mike still had a flight to catch and he wouldn't wait forever.
Mike: Is it your plan to just sleep all day or are we going to get some work done before Red and I leave?
Jason: Screw you.
A minute later a second message came through. It was only a picture, but the sight of it made him laugh. His tiny little god-daughter was all snuggled in pink blankets. She should have looked like a precious angel. Instead, her face was scrunched up and red in anger, as if she were about to scream her head off. He unlocked his computer and started on another project; it didn't seem Jason would be down soon, and he had things to finish up before he flew out later that morning.
"What's so funny?"
Mike looked up to find Drew, otherwise known as Red, scowling at him from the doorway of his office. Red had been with the company for a long time, and was third in command. Mike always enjoyed running missions with him because the two of them worked so differently. Where Mike would run through strategy scenarios, Drew just went in with guns blazing. In fact, that's how he gained his nickname. He usually left nothing but red in his wake. The two of them worked so well together because of their desire to kick ass and take no names. They moved in and out of situations quickly and rarely needed to check with each other on anything. They worked toward a common goal and led their teams to success.
"Nothing, you ready to head out?"
"Ya, the plane is ready and I have the guys on standby. They are waiting to be briefed in the control room."
"I'll be there soon, I'm just waiting on Jason. This shouldn't be a long mission, but we won't know much until we land."
