"You're staring," he said looking over at her on the drive back to his apartment.
"Shouldn't your eyes be on the road?"
"They are, but it's hard to concentrate feeling like my every move is being watched," he said.
"Sorry."
"Is there something you want to talk about?"
Andie couldn't think, her mind went fuzzy when he was this close, and admitting she was sitting there admiring his looks was a bit embarrassing.
"No. It's nothing."
"Are you feeling okay?" he reached over to her with his right hand and began rubbing her leg lightly.
"Ya, I'm fine. No worries."
Not long after, they arrived at his building. He pulled back into the underground garage and ushered her upstairs. She was relaxing on the couch and nearly dozing off when she heard his phone ring.
"Send her up, thanks," she heard him say.
Bella, the midwife Mike had called, examined Andie right in the living room and asked her to lie back so she could use a portable ultrasound machine to see how she was coming along.
"How are you feeling, little mama?"
"Good, I mean as good as can be expected, I guess."
Bella tilted her head to the side, "Well, why don't you tell me a bit about what's going on."
"I'm sick... all the time."
"That's very normal in the first trimester. It should get better in a few weeks, but if it becomes so severe that you can't eat or drink, make sure you let me know." While she was talking, she was buzzing about the living room. Mike helped her get Andie situated and before either of them knew it, they were looking at a picture on a small screen of their child. Mike's face erupted in the biggest smile she had ever seen. Suddenly this whole thing was very real, and she could tell he was abnormally excited. Tears came to her eyes as she looked up at him. She was starting to think they could get through this, together. Bella took some pictures and then asked if they had questions.
Mike must have asked a million different things. Everything about her being so tired and her morning sickness to what she should eat and if they could have sex. When he admitted they already had after he asked his best friend's wife, she wanted to smack him. Had he not seemed so nervous, she probably would have gotten mad. Mike continued to soften her heart, and she felt like she wanted him more and more.
"Thank you for giving me this," he said after the midwife had left. They were curled up on the couch with her feet in his lap while he gave her the best foot rub she had ever had in her life.
She smiled at him and said, "I didn't like you just proclaiming I had to see this woman, but I am happy we had time to do this together."
"That's not what I mean. I meant, giving me our child. Andie I never realized how badly I needed this. Sometimes I don't know what to say because this is all happening so fast, but it all just feels right, you know?"
She looked at him and nodded. Andie still wasn't willing yet to admit she felt the same.
"I don't like it when you aren't with me. Instead of proclaiming again, I want to ask you to move in with me. I want to be here every day of your pregnancy and experience this whole thing with you. You don't have to answer me right now, I just want you to think about it. Can you do that for me?"
"I will think about it. You're right, everything just seems like it is happening so fast I... I... don't want to lose myself. You should know I plan to move into with my sister this weekend. I won't be alone. I'll have her and I guess I will have you too."
He looked across the couch to her and couldn't help himself; he needed to feel more of her, so he moved himself into a position where he could pull her into her arms.
"This wasn't something either of us planned, but it is the biggest blessing. We need to just take this day by day. I feel awful for leaving you that morning. You should know I all but drove everyone crazy while I was gone. I can be a little intense on a mission, but having you in my arms that night and then not knowing if I would see you again was driving me crazy. For the first time in my life, I wanted to be home more than I wanted to be away. I know we can do this; you are going to be an amazing mom."
Before she knew what was happening, she was full on ugly crying. Knowing how much he cared was making her feel so loved. Like she belonged with him, but she still didn't really know him.
"Would you be my boyfriend?"
He looked at her with shock, "Am I not already?"
She started laughing through her tears. "Not officially, you never asked, so I thought I would."
