"I thought I was clear yesterday, I don't need your help. I will not keep this child from you, but I don't expect you to move me in here and take care of my every need."
"Andie, please stop fighting this. I feel like all we do when we talk about the future is fight."
She realized he had a point there, and this morning she had no more fight in her.
"I'm going to get going, I'll be back at 3:00."
"Can I at least drive you?"
"Will you stop so I can get a bagel on Fourth Street?"
He laughed, "Of course."
"Fine, then. Lets go."
Chapter Sixteen
MikedroppedAndieoffbut still sat out front of her apartment. He didn't want to leave her. She seemed to sick yesterday and so tired. What if she fell asleep and didn't wake up to eat lunch? If she was with him, then he wouldn't have to worry about these things, but instead he was sitting in his car like a stalker with his mind painting pictures of everything that could go wrong while she was alone. He knew it was his anxiety getting the best of him, but it was hard to think clearly with everything that was going on.
His phone rang for what felt like the millionth time.
"Hey Mom."
"Hey Mom? That's all you have for me? You realize you have some major explaining to do. You were supposed to call me last night, then I get in to the office and find out you canceled your trip. Jason is flipping out on a team and no one is here for damage control... that's your job, remember? Oh, and where is Andie? How's my little growing grandbaby? And don't you even try to deny it! I was not born yesterday, Michael. I know what you are hiding."
He took a deep breath.
"Mom, I love you."
"Not good enough."
"Can you meet me for coffee on Lexington and Fifth Avenue?"
"Why so far?"
"Because I couldn't convince Andie to stay with me, and I just dropped her off at her apartment. I want to stay close by in case she needs me."
"In case she needs you? Oh!!! My baby boy is falling in love! That poor girl, you are going to drive her insane," she squealed with joy through the phone, "I'll be right there."
Andie climbed the stairs to her apartment and unlocked the door. She nearly jumped when she saw her sister standing in the doorway.
"Where have you been?" Avery asked the second she saw her.
"How did you even get here so quick?"
"I wasn't far, and I used my key to get in."
"Obviously."
"Well?"
"Can I at least put my stuff down and change my clothes?"
"Change your clothes? As in, you have been wearing them for too long or something? Did you not sleep here last night?"
Avery was hitting Andie with one question after another. She shook her head at her sister walking past her into her bedroom to change. It was no surprise Avery followed close behind her.
"I feel like I haven't seen you in a week and now you are telling me you didn't sleep here? I mean, that's what you are telling me, right? Did you meet someone?"
