"I don't think your little one has an appetite yet, that's just me. Don't worry about making me anything, I'm heading home and will grab something on my walk to the train," she said, pulling from his arms and gathering the few things she pulled out from her purse.
Did she really think she was going to walk through NYC and catch a train right now?
"You can't leave," he said more forcefully than he wanted to.
She looked at him with a scowl on her face, "Oh yes I can."
"Andie, I don't want to argue anymore. Please, just stay. I had Christy bring you a change of clothes, and I scheduled us an appointment with a midwife at 3:00. After that we can head to your apartment to get your things."
She just stood there staring at him.
"Andie?" he questioned, stepping towards her.
She let out a exasperated breath and took a step back.
"Wow, listen, Mike. I am extremely appreciative for the last 24 hours, but I really need to get back to my life. It's not like we won't see one another. When I schedule myself an appointment with a doctor, I will let you know. I have a life; I need to see my sister and I work tonight. What about your job? Yesterday you barely had time for me and now you can just spend the day with me?"
"I got someone to cover my trip."
"Your trip?"
"Yes, my trip. I going to fly out this morning, but I didn't want to leave you."
Andie didn't know if she was thankful or upset at how things were going. What man rearranges his entire life for her? Or was it just for the baby?
"Mike, I don't even know what to say."
"Then just say yes. Tell me you will stay, tell me you'll move in, please just agree to something, Andie."
Ugh! He was so frustrating. "I'm going home."
"What about the midwife? You said you don't have insurance and I want to make sure the baby is okay."
There it was, she thought. This really was all about the baby. It was his baby, so she would have to get used to this. As much as she wanted to be independent through this whole thing, there was this guy sticking his nose in everything. And he was the father of her child.
"Where is her office? I'll meet you there."
"She is coming here."
This guy was crazy. What kind of midwife did house calls? she thought.
"One that likes money, one that is the best midwife in Manhattan, and one that delivered my god-daughter about two months ago."
"I didn't mean to say that out loud." From what Andie learned about this home birth he ended up at, the midwife sounded amazing. She also didn't have a doctor of her own, so maybe she should could give a little there.
"Let's compromise. I will go home, get my own clothes to wear, but I'm not packing my things because I am not moving in here. I will come back by 3:00 to meet this midwife of yours, and we will see how it goes."
He started pacing and ran his fingers through his hair in frustration.
"Why won't you live with me? Clearly, we are compatible. I don't like the idea of you being so far away."
"Mike, we have spent less than 72 hours together. It would be insane for me to just move in here. You realize that, right?"
"Not really. Life is weird. I face some terrible situations and have nearly lost my own life a few times. When I see something I want, I just go for it. I don't think about the repercussions anymore," he absently reached for the recent wound on his side. He looked back at her to realize her expression had softened just a bit.
"What is it you want?"
"I want the baby and you to be safe. I want to help you. I want you to let me."
