Okay, was he mad? Going to kill her in some upstairs apartment? Who knew at that point? Andie couldn't stop thinking of all the ridiculously bad things that could happen to her right now. The doors opened after what felt like an eternity. He pulled her through them and down a long walkway beside what had to be 30 cubicles of men and women who looked like they were armed for a war. She passed two rooms that looked like something out of a tech movie, and right next to his "office" was a bunch of people meeting in a gigantic space with a digital representation of some building. As she looked in, they gave her a weird look and closed the door. In fact, everyone was looking at her strangely. As if they had never seen a slightly pregnant, blonde-haired girl being dragged through their office before.
"I thought you said you worked for a security company?" she asked quietly.
"I do."
"Then why is your office bigger than my apartment?"
"Questions later," he grunted.
Staring at him, she did not understand what he was expecting from her. She had a million questions, so she started with, "How did you know I'm pregnant?"
"My mother. She insisted I come down to help some poor girl with terrible morning sickness who didn't have an appointment. You can imagine my surprise when I saw you sitting there."
"Oh."
"Oh, that's all you have to say?"
"Honestly, I have no idea what to say. I literally found out a few hours ago that what I suspected was true. Then I had to track down some guy who is clearly disgusted by me to tell him he will be a father, and then to top it all off I fell asleep in your lobby like an idiot. The only thing going for me was the little old lady who held my hair as I puked in your bathroom, and I just found out that same little old lady is your mother!" she rambled on until she was yelling at him by the time she finished.
"Disgusted?" he said with a shocked look on his face.
"Seriously, that's what you got from all that?" she grunted in exasperation, "Listen, I don't know why you brought me up here. I don't need you or anything from you. I'm just here to inform the biological father of my child that he will have a kid walking around on this earth. There now I have said it, so I'm done. Have a grand life," she said turning on her heels and heading for the door.
As she grabbed the handle, she heard the lock click. She was trapped an office with a self-locking door and a man who drove her insane. What the hell? Where was she? Thinking to herself she had made one too many mistakes today, she looked back at him and saw the most ridiculous smirk come over his face and he held up some remote control looking thing with a button on it. She rolled her eyes and realized that must be what he used to lock the door.
"Are you done?"
"Yes. Let me out."
"That's not happening. Let's get a few things straight. First, never use the word disgusted when referring to yourself again. I am not now, nor have I ever been disgusted by you," he said as he walked around his desk toward her.
"Then why did you make that face when you saw me?" she tried desperately to keep the hurt from her voice.
"Because I had just gotten off an elevator ride with my mother who wouldn't shut up about how cute you were, or how sweet you were, and when she wasn't saying that, she was telling me how pregnant you were. Except I didn't know it was you until I saw you. I literally looked at you and realized I was about to become a father, so cut me some slack here."
"I don't need you."
"I know, you said that." He took a step towards her and her breath picked up.
"I don't want you either."
"That is a lie."
"I mean, I don't want you to be my child's father."
"Well, my little angel, it's a little too late for that."
Chapter Nine
Hefinishedthelastfew steps forward and directed her towards the couch in his office. Mike watched the way she was moving her body. Everything seemed to take more effort than normal and as soon as he had her sitting he could see in her eyes how tired she really was. He needed to remember she was going through a lot right now. She was likely as shocked as he was, and didn't seem to feel well on top of everything else that was going on in her life.
"Listen, we have a lot we need to figure out here. I am in the middle of tying up a case, but I don't want you to go. My mother was right when she said she could squeeze you in; I'm booked solid today. Can you stay here for a bit? I need to get to a meeting next door and then I will be back. Just relax, or take another nap. I'll have my mom bring you in something for lunch."
Andie thought that sounded like a glorious idea right now. The couch felt like heaven, but no, she couldn't just sit here waiting for him all day. That was crazy.
"Thanks, but really I should be going. I have someplace I need to be."
"Where?"
