It seemed like he didn’t know how to react. Maybe no one had ever cared enough to ask him to stay before.
He had eyes that could easily break a heart—the sincerity in them when he dropped his guard and let me see it.
“I make you feel safe,” he said.
“Yes. But it’s so much more than that. I want you here. With me. Every morning. Every night. I love spending time with you, Felice,” I whispered.
Dressed in his suit, sans shoes, he got back into bed. He pulled me close, and I wrapped my arms around his, sticking my ass into his crotch. I fell asleep a minute later, but jet lag was a bitch. I woke up in the middle of the night.
He was gone.
I fell asleep again, reaching for his pillow and hugging it.
Before the sun came up, he was next to me again. I was clinging to him.
Chapter38
Roma
The museum had always been one of my favorite places in the city. I loved the building and everything inside of it. Days when new exhibits rolled out were some of my most memorable. Sharing new information with the world about prehistoric creatures gave me butterflies.
Felice, Italy, our wedding, our new villa—they still held me in their warm grasps, though. My love for the museum and the passion for what I did seemed to help ease me back into reality. The transition would have been a hundred times harder if I still wasn’t so excited about my career.
Felice drove me my first morning back and walked me in. He was going to ride back with Celso. Fredo was going to be my new shadow. Felice refused to budge on it until the issue with my father, Alfonso, and Jack was settled.
Vows spoken in church and a contract signed in blood seemed everlasting enough to me, but my husband wasn’t convinced.
“Have a good day at work, honey,” I said, waving at him as I walked away. He’d gone as far as Gonzalo, but his eyes never left me.
When I walked into the office, it felt like hanging up first while the other person hangs on. I wanted to dash out just to look at him again. When he stepped through the door, right after I put my coffee and bag down, I ran into his arms like I hadn’t seen him in years.
He grinned. “You’re a fucking adorable little herbivore.” He slipped my eyeglasses on my face.
Sometimes I spent a lot of time on the computer, so I bought a pair of glasses that had blue-light filtering lenses. I thought they made me look scholarly. They were oversized and leopard print. I must have forgotten them in the car. He’d noticed and pocketed them.
“Special delivery, ah?”
He leaned in, setting his nose against my neck, breathing me in. “You still smell like me.”
“I was just in the car with you—less than five minutes ago.”
The dangerous carnivore had been playing with his food,me, before he let her go.
“Too long.”
“Right?” I whispered.
He took my chin in his hand and kissed my lips. “Who would’ve thought apricots were stronger than adrenaline, ah?”
“Me,” I whispered, dazed by his kiss. “They’re a superfood. I know. I eat them every day.”
His laughter made me blink. His perfect teeth were shocking white against a sea of black stubble.
“Excuse me.”
Felice turned me with him, but kept me tucked behind him, to face a guy standing in the doorway. He held a package in his hands.
“Ms. Corvo?”
