“Cameras?” I asked. My mind was already racing at the idea of someone having been in our place; that shouldn’t be possible. The building had its own security with a front desk and surveillance cameras all around, and Oliver had set up his own measures inside of the apartment. If someone had been inside, we should have known about it.

“I wouldn’t put it past them considering all the pictures they had plastered all over my apartment. Cameras would be the next logical move,” Nic said calmly, seemingly unbothered by her tied-up state. “But if you could take the hood off—”

“Why the hell should we do you any fucking favors? It’s not like you listen to us,” Sacha ranted.

“Shut up, Sacha. Take the fucking thing off, Vas!”

Something in her voice sounded off, so I ignored Sacha’s bitching and took it off. Not a second too soon either because she puked in the cloth hood until she was dry heaving. Her entire body shook from the force of it. When she tried to wipe her mouth, she stopped mid-motion as if she’d just remembered she was restrained.

“Nicholette—”

“Be prepared for a lot more of that in the coming months if my experience over the past four weeks has anything to say about it,” she deadpanned, spitting into the hood before wrinkling her nose. “Ugh, that’s fucking awful. I need to get that medicine.”

My heart pounded in my chest with the realization of what she meant. Sacha must have had the same thought because he swerved the car over and parked, his hands clenching and unclenching around the steering wheel before he managed to speak from between clenched teeth.

“Does that mean you’re…”

“Rhodes said you found the test, boss,” Nic said softly, keeping her eyes away from his. “You should call him.”

Sacha slammed his hands on the steering wheel while cursing her out in Russian, complaining about how she didn’t listen and promising he was going to kick her ass, pregnant or not. Nic chuckled beside me then looked over, her blue-green eyes bright with tears. “I don’t know Russian, but I get the gist of the tone. He knows that, right?”

My lips twitched despite my best efforts. With a sigh, I dug around in the car until I found a napkin and wiped her mouth for her. I threw it in the hood and tied the whole thing up before opening the car door to toss it out, not wanting the puke smell to fill the car. “Why should we call Rhodes? I think it’s safe to say that Sacha and I want to hear this from you, Nic. No, wedeserveto hear it from you, not Rhodes.”

Just as she opened her mouth, Sacha’s phone rang. He glared back at us through the rearview mirror before answering on speaker.

“Sacha. Meet me in Shadowglen Estates. I’ll meet you at the gate, and we can all go in together. The others are already on their way. I have information,” Rhodes said. The flick of a lighter came over the line after his claim.

“This have anything to do with Nic?” I asked, staring down at the woman in question.

“Yeah, and some other people. The F?rstners are going to be there in force. All hell broke loose today.”

Nicholette let out a loud huff of annoyance. “Is Ansel there?”

There was a moment of tense silence. “Nic?!”

“Tell him we need a little bit, then we’ll be there,” Nic said, glancing between my brother and me. “We have a bit of catching up to do. He can yell at me later.”

“Why would Ansel be yelling at you?” Sacha crooned.

“Is this really the best time—” Nic shot back. I cut her off by wrapping my hand around her throat, squeezing lightly in warning.

“I swear to god, slut, if you kissed one more goddamn person, I’m going to lose my everloving shit.”

“I need to know the answer to that too before I hang up, love,” Rhodes added on, inhaling deeply.

Nicholette didn’t say anything for a minute, taking a deep breath before visibly bracing herself, but she didn’t say what I thought she would. “I talked to Maeve. That’s who I saw before you kidnapped me. You’re not the only one with updates, so let’s all play catch-up together at Ansel’s place in a few hours.”

I’m going to kill her.

I’d just gotten her back, but I was ready to throttle her.

“I kissed her before I got out of the car,” she tacked on like we needed the clarification.

Rhodes whistled. “Ansel must be really fucking important if you’re using Maeve as a way to side-step talking about him. I’ll remember that when I talk to my old friend while we wait.”

Click.

The silence was deafening. We all sat there, no one willing to break it, until Sacha took a deep breath, unbuckled his seatbelt, and got out of the car. The slam of the door behind him shook the car with its force, and Nic didn’t try to follow him.
