I press send, satisfaction filling my chest. Let’s see what she comes back with. I stare at my phone, waiting for her response. Tapping my fingers on my desk, my phone remains dark. I push away from my desk and head upstairs to my deck for some fresh air while I wait for her answer. An hour later and I still haven’t heard from her. I could hack into the airline servers to find her and meet her at her conference, but I feel like that’s maybe taking things too far. Not to mention, if I get caught hacking into airline servers, which is highly likely, I’ll probably end up behind bars, which doesn’t suit my plans.
Finally, my phone buzzes.
Cupcake:You don’t have to do that. You’ve already been so generous plus I’m away for work and I like to be professional
Cupcake:There are social expectations for the evenings anyway
Cupcake:See you in a month *smiling emoji*
What the hell?If she thinks she won’t be seeing me between now and her next ovulation cycle, she’s sorely mistaken. For one, I wouldn’t be able to survive that long without seeing her. And two, she’s not going to get rid of me that easily.
Me:No
Cupcake:What do you mean … no?
Me:I mean I won’t see you in a month. I’ll see you when you get back from your work thing
Cupcake:There’s no need. Spend the time with your new lady
My heart spasms. That damn mistake is going to keep biting me in the ass. After a few minutes, I reluctantly text back in defeat.
Me:Okay
Cupcake:Great. Good luck with your lady
Me:Thanks. I’m gonna need it
Cupcake:Nah. She’ll love you
Well shit! If only she did.
Me:I’m not so sure about that
Cupcake:Sure she will. What’s not to love?
Apparently, my semen is the only lovable part of me.
Cupcake:Sorry, gotta go
I can’t shake the feeling she isn’t going anywhere, that she’s making an excuse to avoid me. I know my performance was shit last night, but I know I can do better. I’ve never, in my life, since becoming sexually active, left my lover unsatisfied. Last night was an anomaly and I want the chance to show her what it would be like between us if she just let down those damn walls of hers.

Standing outside the hospital doors, I’m trying my best to appear casual—I’m anything but. My pulse pounds in my ears as I repeatedly swallow the excess saliva being produced by my nerves. The more I thought about Sarah’s sudden need to attend a conference, the more my gut told me she was putting up her walls again. So here I am, leaning against the garden wall opposite the doors into the maternity wing of the hospital. I know this is her Saturday to volunteer. Glancing down at my phone, I check the time. She should be out in another ten minutes. I got here early to ensure I didn’t miss her. I can’t wait to see her face and hear her excuses.
My phone lights up as I’m about to put it away.
Hayley:Hey, when are you bringing Sarah around again?
Me:I don’t know. I’m working on it
Hayley:Well, don’t take too long. Colton loved her
Me:He’s not the only one
Hayley:Oh, do tell, little brother *winking emoji*
Me:Next time we catch up
