“Thanks, Munchkin.” He smiles at her and Molly kisses his cheek with a grin, chuckling silently.
I can’t believe he swore in front of the kids. I find it impossible to imagine anyone in my family speaking like that, let alone in front of kids. I mean, I’m no angel, I swear but I temper my language in mixed company. It further highlights the differences between Sarah’s family and mine. I’m sad to say that I prefer hers.
“Do you have a business card?” Oliver asks. OliverfreakingStone wants my business card! “I wouldn’t mind having you take a look at our system some time.”
I could kick my own butt right now. “Sorry. I don’t carry them on me to events like this.”
He leans forward, grabbing his wallet out of his pocket. He deftly pulls out a card and hands it to me. “Contact Jase, my assistant. He’ll set up an appointment.”
I take the card from him. “Uh, sure thing. Any particular time?”
“Call him sometime this week. I’ll let him know to expect your call. Let’s see what we can set up.”
I can only nod, trying to contain my internal fist bump at gaining the attention of one of the richest men in America. Wait until I tell Dylan. The accounts we’re winning lately are really putting us on the map.
The kids move onto the grass to play and conversation is easy around the table. Max constantly has some part of him touching Molly and Theo and Emma are the same, as are Kate and Oliver. I hope there comes a time when I can openly show Sarah the affection I feel for her. For now, I’ll settle with pressing my leg alongside hers beneath the table. She hasn’t pulled away, so I’ll take it as a win.
CHAPTER19
–sarah–
I can’t believehow well AJ fits in with my family. I thought my brother was going to have a problem with him, but over the course of the afternoon, they’ve been talking easily.
All of the guys have decided to play a game of soccer on the grass, leaving us girls enjoying a peaceful cup of coffee on the back deck. I’m surprised Max, Theo, and Oliver were able to tear themselves away from their ladies. I’m thrilled for my siblings’ happiness even if I’m a little sad for myself.
“I have to say, Sarah, AJ is a lovely young man. And so handsome, too,” Mom blurts.
The other three women hum in agreement. “Yeah, he’s one of the good ones, that’s for sure,” Emma states.
“You think so?” I ask.
“Absolutely. And genetically blessed too. Your baby is going to be gorgeous,” Molly adds.
“Well, so long as my baby is healthy. That’s all that really matters to me.”
“Of course.”
“Oh, are you two trying to have a baby?” Kate asks, her denim eyes sparkling in the late afternoon sun.
I glance around the table. It’s one thing for my family and close friend to know about our arrangement, but it’s another for someone I barely know. Emma helps me out. “Sarah’s ready to start a family but she doesn’t have a boyfriend. AJ’s her donor.” She says it as though it’s a common everyday occurrence for women to hang out with their donors on the weekend.
“Oh right. Good for you. You’ve definitely got yourself a fine specimen there,” Kate says as she fans herself and I feel my cheeks heat. Heisa fine specimen.
Mom leans across the table, her eyes scanning the area. “Have you noticed the way he looks at Sarah?” Mom whispers.
“Mom. He doesn’t look at me like anything. Don’t start with this. There is nothing between us other than maybe the start of a friendship.”
“I wouldn’t be so sure about that, Sis.”
“Oh, I agree. I think he’s in deep with you already, Sare,” Molly adds.
I shake my head. “No, he’s not. He said he considers us friends. He’s helping me with my pregnancy planuntilI get pregnant. Nothing more.”
“We’ll see,” Emma states with a soft smile and a look in her eye like she knows something I don’t.
“Yeah, I wouldn’t be so sure about that,” Kate whispers. “I had no idea he was only your donor. He seems like so much more than that.”
We fall into silence and Emma watches Theo with her boys wearing a contented smile as he supports Lachlan.
