We all nod in agreement, the room feeling more relaxed than it was forty minutes ago.

CHAPTER47

–aj–

Since I’ve been homefrom the hospital, Sarah’s thrown up as soon as her eyes open every single morning. I feel helpless and she refuses to see the doctor about it. She says it’s because of her anxiety, but I don’t think it’s that at all. The tracking app on my phone says she should have finished her period yesterday, but Sarah hasn’t mentioned anything about getting her period this month, and I didn’t find her crying in the bathroom as she has before.

I wonder if she’s given up? Or maybe she doesn’t want to mention it because she’s trying to cope with her devastation on her own?

“Hey, Dylan. Can you help me with something?”

“Sure. What do you need?”

“I need to get some flowers for my girl and I can’t drive yet. She’s been through a lot of stress with trying to get pregnant, then finding out I was supposed to be her new boss, and then the fall.” Fuck, that’s a lot of stress in a short period of time. Maybe itisstress making her sick.

“No problem. Let’s go.”

I’m getting around much easier with the crutches, so it’s not long before we’re on our way. We stop by one of the best florists in the city,Blooms and Balloons, to get an arrangement of spring flowers for Sarah. As soon as I saw the bright colors and smelled the springtime scent, I knew they’d be perfect for my girl. We stop at the drugstore to pick up a couple of items, then hit the grocery store so I can cook a meal for us tonight, instead of Sarah having to do everything when she gets home. I’m steadier on my feet, and I can sit at the counter to cut up the ingredients.

Stopping in front of my place, I turn to Dylan. “Thanks, man. If you can help me get all this inside, then we may as well call it a day.”

“No problem. I might take up being an Uber driver if our business ever tanks.”

“As if that’s ever gonna happen. We’re busier than ever with the accounts we’ve secured lately. Mr. Mitchell’s happy with our work forThe Cardinaland Oliver’s impressed with our work forThe Parkerville Project, he wants us to look at his business. Don’t forget how happy Mr. Noble was with our work for him. These are huge fucking contracts. We won’t be going out of business anytime soon.” If anything, we need to seriously look at employing another member to join our team.

“Yeah, I know. I was joking around. Let’s get all this shit inside. I might go for a ride since the afternoon is nice.”

We make quick work of unloading Dylan’s car and then he takes off. I clean up a little: wash the breakfast dishes, tidy the living room, set up the upstairs deck for dinner, and take a seat at the counter to start preparing our meal.

I’m about to set the timer on the oven for the chicken casserole when Sarah walks in the door. “Honey, I’m home!” She calls out with a smile in her voice. My lips tip up in a matching grin. Her brows furrow when she steps into the kitchen and scans the counters to see the mess I’ve made. “What on earth are you doing? You shouldn’t be making dinner. You’re not supposed to be on your feet.”

My smile widens as I step toward her, wrapping one arm around her waist as soon as I’m close enough. I love how much she worries about me. I press my lips against hers without preamble. Her body softens against mine and her hands find their place in my hair at the nape of my neck. Once I’ve given her a proper welcome home kiss, I draw back slowly, keeping my lips close to hers. “Welcome home, Cupcake,” I whisper, then bite her bottom lip gently because I can’t resist the puffy pillow.

One side of her lips tip up and I glance at her sparkling eyes. “I missed you today.”

“Not as much as I missed you.” We have thirty-five minutes to kill and I have just the thing to keep us busy. I tug her hand. “Come with me, I’ve got something to show you.”

She drops her purse on the sideboard where she usually keeps it and I grab my second crutch. Sarah follows me slowly up the stairs—though I am getting faster at climbing them—and into our bedroom. A gasp escapes her and her eyes widen when they land on the flowers and gift bag. She tears her eyes away from them and steps carefully into me, wrapping her arms around my torso. I can’t embrace her the way I want while I’m holding both crutches, so I drop one and wrap my arm tightly around her.

“Thank you. They’re gorgeous but you didn’t have to get me anything.”

I kiss her forehead. “I wanted to thank you for looking after me since my accident. The flowers don’t seem enough for all you’ve done for me.”

She presses her lips together and creases form between her sculpted brows. “You don’t have to thank me for anything. Helping you has given me the chance to show you how much I love you. I wouldn’t be anywhere else.” She rises on tiptoes and swipes her lips across mine. I slide my tongue between her lips to deepen our connection. Every time I kiss Sarah, I fall for her all over again.

She’s my life, the very breath that fills my lungs, the reason my heart beats faster—the reason it beats at all. I’m sure it was thoughts of her that pulled me through the night I was partially buried by rockfall in low temperatures.

I soften our kiss slowly and nudge her nose with mine. “Open your present.”

Her smile spreads across her lust-drunk lips. “Okay. I love presents, so I won’t say no.”

I chuckle. “Of course, who doesn’t love getting presents? It’s not much, so don’t get too excited.”

She smells the flowers first. “These are gorgeous.”

“They reminded me of you,” I tell her as I step closer.

Sarah opens the gift bag and peers inside, finding the rectangular box. Her eyes narrow as she studies it closely. “What’s this about?”
