“No.” I step into the walk-in closet and dress out of his line of sight, returning to find him still as he was when I left him. “C’mon, AJ. Help me out. I promise I’ll sit on your face when the doctor gives you the all-clear.” I can’t believe this is the conversation we’re having.
His eyes light up. “Promise?”
I shake my head at him and huff out a laugh. “Promise.”
CHAPTER46
–aj–
After a lingering kiss,Sarah climbs into her car and heads off to work. Having her here with me, living with me, still feels unreal. If I could walk without crutches, I’m certain I’d have a bounce in my step. It took a bit of convincing to get Sarah to return to the office, but there really wasn’t anything more she could do for me at home. I can manage everything and Dylan’s here during the day anyway.
I pour myself a coffee and lean against the kitchen counter to enjoy the first sip of steaming goodness. Nothing beats a good cup of coffee in the morning. Well … maybe that’s not quite true. I can think of several things, all of which involve my sexy girlfriend, that trump coffee. My phone vibrates in my pocket and I dig it out.
Grandfather:My office. 9:30 a.m. sharp.
My eyes widen, then I frown at the message. I’ve been home for a week and have an appointment at one for a follow-up with my doctor. It’s one of the reasons Sarah didn’t want to go back to work but Dylan promised to take me and report every single detail back to her.
The large barn door to our office slides open. “Morning,” Dylan calls as his footsteps get louder the closer he comes to me. I glance up at him to say hi. “What’s going on?”
I hold up my phone to show him the screen. “I’ve been summoned by the almighty to his tower.”
Dylan grabs a cup and makes himself a coffee. “Shit. What do you think it’s about?”
“Really? You have to ask.”
He turns, leaning his ass against the opposite counter. “You’d think he’d give you a little time to recover after your accident.”
I nod. “One would think so but we are talking about my grandfather here.”
“I can drive you in.”
“Thanks.” I tuck my phone back into my pocket and take another sip of my coffee. “Let’s get some work done first.”
We make our way into our office and as I’m about to sit my phone rings and Hayley’s face lights up the screen. “Hey, Sis. What’s up?”
“I got summoned into the office for a nine-thirty meeting.”
“Shit. So did I.” Dylan spins in his chair, listening to my side of the conversation.
“What do you think it’s about?”
Who the fuck knows if Hayley’s gonna be there? He’s never deemed her worthy to talk with about business.
“I assumed he was calling me in to finalize the details of me taking over the company, but maybe that’s not it if you’re going to be there too.”
“Hmm. I’ve never been to his office before.” No kidding. Neither had I until the day everything went to shit.
“You want me to pick you up? I mean Dylan will pick you up since he’s gonna be driving.”
“How about I come and get you? Seems more efficient.”
“Sure. See you at nine.” We disconnect the call and I spin my chair toward my best friend, who’s waiting for information. “Hayley’s gonna pick me up since she’s been summoned as well.”
Dylan whistles long and low. “Man, I wonder what’s going on?”
“Me too.”
