The forest comes alive with a hundred cloying scents. The rain bathes the earth on the floor under our feet, bringing the gritty scent of dirt to life. Rain caresses the endless trees, their dark green leaves and brown bark filling my nose.

‘It’s so dark,’ Jaken murmurs. The two light witches raise their hands, undoubtedly to do that light-thing I’ve seen Zenna do.

‘Don’t,’ I snap. ‘If the vamps have any sentries, they’ll see.’

‘Don’t worry about that,’ Divina calls. ‘I will take care of any who get in our path.’

I glance at Vale, his face grim. I have no problem killing vampires, but what about the humans or witches who might be around? If they get in the way? No. I won’t let that happen. Not again.

I inhale, wishing the scents didn’t bother me so much, not when I need so desperately to focus on my mate.

Zenna, which exit?

My hands shake at my sides, so I clench them into fists. Jana looks worried, fearful. Jaken looks much the same, his hand on his gun at his side. ‘That won’t help you.’

‘I know,’ he admits. ‘Comforting habit.’ He gives me a once over. ‘In a fight, would you or a vampire win?’

I give a low growl.

Vale answers for me. ‘He’s an alpha.’ My Second smiles at me and I nod.

Divina slows, her eyes closed. ‘I can feel her.’ Worry creases her brow.

‘What is it?’ I snap at the same time as the others.

Divina’s hair ripples. ‘She is not alone.’
