I giggle, pretending to squirm away. ‘Nooo. I’m sorry!’

His hands are all over me, tickling, fondling. ‘Oh, you will be.’ He plasters me with kisses, hands roaming over my ass—still careful of the bite. He lifts up my—his—shirt to admire me. Ah, my marks are here, too.

I look down and realise he’s right. There are slight claw marks under my breasts. I gasp at him. ‘Look what you’ve done.’

He grins and licks his way from my stomach toward them. I could heal them if you’d like.

I stare down, liking the way the marks curve up my breasts. I bat him away. No. Leave it.

Cai smiles. ‘That’s my girl.’ He fixes the shirt, zips up his pants, then hauls me into his arms with a squeal and leads me out of the tent.

My gaze is filled with the most luscious green forest I’ve ever seen, combined with the beautiful setting overhead, my breath catches in my throat.

Cai sets me on my feet, his hands moving to my shoulders. ‘Nice to be outside?’ He brushes my hair back and starts absently detangling it with his fingers.

I inhale deeply. ‘You have no idea.’ I finally notice the other tents. ‘Wait. Where are we?’

Cai squeezes my shoulders lightly. No one else is up, out of their tents, but there must be twenty spread out in the large clearing. ‘Do you remember, growing up, that I have a cousin pack? We usually don’t hang out. Wolves in mixed packs tend to fight. However, this is family.’ He points to the largest tent. ‘That’s Noah and Alexa’s.’

I turn to look up at him. ‘Your cousin, Noah?’

‘Mmm-hmm. Come. Let’s go for a walk.’

We wind through the large clearing until it closes behind us, and we’re walking among the thick trees. I tilt my head up, drinking in the waning sunlight. We must have slept most of the afternoon away. It’s still so bright, though. It’s been too long since I was outside.

‘Wolf Grove was destroyed.’ Cai’s voice is heavy with sadness, but it’s guilt that passes down the bond. ‘The human that broke into the camp, the one Divina killed, he set the bomb. Our people don’t want to return.’

Our people.

I look over at him.

He smiles knowingly. ‘You’re mine.’ The possessiveness in his voice goes straight to my sex.

I reach out amongst the trees to take his hand. It’s warm in my own. My mind is still in our tent, reeling at what we’ve done. How drastically things have changed.

‘There’s something I should mention,’ Cai says. ‘All the information you sent to me while you were held captive. It tells me one thing. Drusilla is dangerous.’

I nod in agreement. ‘Whether she gets what she wants or not.’

‘What she wants is to be the last Origin standing, ruling over everything.’

I inhale deeply, still savouring the fresh outside air. I can also smell my mate on the shirt I’m wearing, which I love. ‘For a moment, it seemed like you and I were to be part of her plan. To unite the Clans.’

‘I’m not sure she has the patience or the mind for long-term strategy,’ Cai muses. ‘She just wants power and blood. Or she never would have let you slip away.’

‘She never seemed overly interested in me.’

‘That vampire who bit you did.’

‘Well, Callen helped me in his own way.’ I glance down at my left wrist. ‘Though, he’s still an asshole for doing that to me.’

Cai smirks. ‘I’m glad that’s your take on him, because he’s in the back of my truck.’

I whip my head to him. ‘What? You abducted him?’

He shrugs. ‘Yup. He hurt you. I was going to kill him, but you asked me not to. What was I supposed to do? Let him run home and alert everyone that you were gone?’

I blink up at the sunlight. I’m still not sure if it hurts them. No one would confirm or deny that. I suppose we could let it wash over Callen and find out, but even the idea sits wrong.
