I shot up off the cushion and pointed at him. “Don’t!”

“What the hell happened?” Bellagio took a step closer.

“Hotel, back up right now.” I ordered.

He took a step back silently.

“What the fuck happened?” Joey lifted his hand to his chin.

"They won't tell me on the phone,” I shrugged, “and they can't get in touch with my mom."

Nick tried to speak again. “I swear if my fa—”

I stomped toward Nick, causing him to walk backward and pin himself against the wall. I leaned close to his face. “You better fucking hope I don't find out you caused this. He was mine to handle. It was not your fucking family’s job!”

He normally would have fought me in that very instant but instead he held his hands out to the side. “Gavino, I’ll find out what really happened. I don’t want war with your family anymore. I got your back.”

Joey huffed. “The Island won't tell you the truth. That’s one of the roughest places.”

I backed away from Nick slowly. He relaxed his posture. I whirled around to Joey and Bellagio.

Bellagio nodded. “They will cover the truth. They always have. I served three years there.”

I turned to Nick. “Go home to your dad and get what information you can. Something’s fucking up and I don’t trust anyone outside this room right now.”

As if on cue, a ringing sound came from Nick. He yanked his phone from his pocket hastily and his gaze widened. He flashed the screen to show us it was his father. “Fuck.”

Hey dad. He was not as convincing as Sofia had been when she attempted to act casual on the phone with her father that night in my apartment. He paused for a moment then rolled his eyes as he pulled the phone away from his face and pressed a button on the screen. He held his phone in the air.

Am I on speaker now?Alphonse’s demonic voice echoed in the room.

Yeah, you're on speaker.

Good.Alphonse chuckled.Gavino D'Angelo, I know you can hear me and the worst mistake you ever made was underestimating what I am capable of.

I froze instantly. My jaw clamped tight. Nick, Joey, and Bellagio’s eyes all widened.

Nick, you and Sofia are next on my list. He laughed ominously. You think I don't have eyes everywhere? I see you too, Bellagio and Joey.

We all began to glance around the room suspiciously.

Nick, you fucked up by betraying me with the enemy and I'm going to make you pay. Sofia looks so peaceful sleeping right now. It would be a shame if—

“Fuck!” I did not hear the rest of what he said. I sprinted to the basement stairs and dashed through the ground level of the house before racing up the grand staircase in the foyer. I tripped over a rug but managed to get my balance and kept going. I threw open the heavy, wooden bedroom door but caught it so it would not hit the wall.

Sofia was lying peacefully, asleep on the bed.I spun around when I heard footsteps in the hallway. Bellagio, Joey, and Nick appeared in the doorway. I placed a finger over my mouth. Joey and Bellagio crept around the room quietly, searching for any cameras. Nick checked to make sure all windows were locked, and screens were intact. I examined the closet, bathroom, and under the bed for any sign of life.

Sofia stirred and rolled over, cracking her eyes open. She shot up into a sitting position, gripping the blanket tightly against her chest. “What the hell is going on?” Her gaze snapped at Joey for a second as he dug through a fake potted plant in the corner of the room.

Before any of us could answer, Nick’s phone rang once more. Bellagio and Joey sped over to Nick’s side. I sat on the bed next to Sofia and draped my arm around her.

“What’s going on?” She whispered. “Why are you so tense?”

What?! Nick snapped as he answered on speaker.

Understand the five of you are trapped. All five of you have a target on the back of your heads and I will stop at nothing until you’re all buried.

Sofia slapped her palm to her mouth and her eyes flooded with tears. She stared at me, pleading for it to all be a nightmare. I recognized that look in anyone’s eyes.
