He chuckled then. “Sorry. I guess I let my excitement about being so close to you make me a little bit too honest.” He winked at me. “But what do you say? You think you can get away tonight?”
“Look, Matthew, I really—”
“What’s going on over here?” Travis asked. His voice was coming from directly next to me, and I looked up at him with nervous eyes.
How much of that had he heard?
“Oh, not much,” Matthew said, laughing, taking a step back as if he were intimidated by Travis’s presence, which didn’t surprise me. Travis was a very intimidating man.
“It just looked to me like you were flirting with my assistant,” Travis said, pretending to be joking. “Are you hoping to get back together with her?”
“If I said yes, would you give her the evening off?” Matthew said with a small laugh.
Travis didn’t respond. Instead, he looked at me. “Molly?”
“Yes, sir,” I said, glancing up at him.
“Would you like to have the evening off so you can go on a date with Matthew here?”
I stared at him, not believing he was actually asking me this.
“Of course she does,” Matthew said, answering for me.
“Molly, I’m asking you,” Travis said. There was a tinge of menace in his voice.
I shivered slightly. “Well, I mean, I know we have a lot of work, so I don’t really know if there’s time for me to go out with Matthew here and—”
“But, Molly, remember what I just said?” I looked over at Matthew.
“Sorry. What?”
“You know, about the thing I wish I’d seen?”
I stared at him for a few seconds, not believing what he was saying.
“What is it you wish you’d seen?” Travis took a step forward and looked down at Matthew.
Matthew laughed uncomfortably. “Oh, just, you know, to see Molly super happy.”
“Uh-huh.” Travis cleared his throat. “I’m afraid we’re going to have to go to our next meeting. I don’t think Molly will be able to meet up with you this evening. Come on, Molly. Let’s go.”
Travis grabbed me by the elbow and escorted me out of the room. I shook him off me and glared at him. “Excuse me, that was rude.”
“I was rude? I just saved your ass.”
“What do you mean, you just saved my ass?”
“You didn’t want to go on a date with that jerk.”
“You don’t know.”
“Well then, why didn’t you say, ‘Yes, please. Can I have the evening off,’ if you wanted to go on a date with him so badly?”
“I mean, I didn’t want to go on a date with him, but you don’t know that.”
“I did know that. What was it that he wished he’d seen?” he asked, curious as we made our way to the elevator.
“He said he wished he’d seen myOface,” I responded without thinking.
