The restof the day went without incident. Travis got called into a meeting with his board of directors and said I didn’t have to attend. I was slightly disappointed when I left the office and hadn’t seen him again, but I knew it was for the best. I wasn’t quite sure how I would move forward in this role, knowing that Travis would be flirtatious. As soon as I stepped out of Covington & Associates, I grabbed my phone to call Poppy. I knew she’d be waiting eagerly to hear an update.
“Oh my gosh. What’s going on?”
I laughed at Poppy’s excited voice.
“Don’t you have a job, Poppy?”
“No. You know I’m looking just like you were,” she said. “And I haven’t found anything. Unfortunately, I haven’t met a billionaire and had a one-night stand and had him hire me at his company.”
“That’s not how it went, Poppy. You know that.”
“I know. But you did have a one-night stand with said millionaire.
“Wait,” she said. “I correct myself. Billionaire.”
“Ha ha, Poppy. No need to keep reminding me.”
“So tell me, did you see him? What happened? Did you guys hook up in his office? Have you had office sex already or in the elevator? Oh my God, it will be so hot if you have sex in the elevator.” She paused. “Sorry, I got a little carried away.”
“A little carried away?” I giggled. “You got totally carried away.”
“So answer me. Alice wants to know, too.”
“What do you mean Alice wants to know?” I frown slightly.
“I mean, didn’t you say that your coworker Alice—”
“Poppy.”
“Yes?”
“Have you been in contact with Alice?”
There was silence on the other side of the line.
“Poppy.”
“What?” she said. “We may have texted a couple of times since that time you called me and we exchanged numbers.”
“You didn’t tell me you and Alice were in contact.”
“Well, I didn’t think it mattered.”
“And you’ve been talking about me?”
“Well, she sent me a message this afternoon.”
“You told her?”
“I didn’t tell her everything. I was in a conference and—”
I sighed. “Fine. It doesn’t matter. I’m going to tell her.”
“Okay. So tell me what happened?” Poppy said. “I’m dying here. I’m literally dying.”
“You’re dying to hear what happened on my first day of work. Really?”
“Yes. This is better than a soap opera. Move over,Days of Our Lives.”
