“About what?”
“All of it. Being afraid, knowing you weren’t going to college, all these thoughts and plans. You never said anything.”
“Erick, we don’t talk like that.”
“We used to…”
“No. We talk science.”
“I know everything about you…”
“From Davis.”
He frowned. “How…”
“Other than our tense moments last year, do you remember ever having a non-science related conversation with me alone?” He blinked. “You don’t because there aren’t any. Any non-science discussions were always with Davis, your family, or mine. It’s okay.”
She started to turn to leave and he said, “Wait, Amanda.” He seemed uncertain and she understood.
“Erick, I know your favorite color is coral but you tell everyone orange because it sounds more masculine. I know your favorite food is ribeye. It’s the only steak you’ll eat or nothing at all. You hate corn on the cob because it gets stuck in your teeth. You hate the taste of alcohol but love the smell of cigars.”
Giving him a gentle smile, she continued, “You love Titanic but blatantly lie about it. You’re squeamish about horror flicks and can’t handle movies with rape scenes. You have a particular affinity for the tides and have never used an alarm clock.”
“Mandy, Amanda…”
“You feel sad sometimes and don’t know why. You have periods of extreme self-doubt you hide behind a compulsive need to succeed. You love your family and would do anything for them but sometimes feel you don’t quite fit. You’ve been attracted to both men and women but choose women because they’re softer and you crave that sensation against you.”
Looking around his room, she added, “All the times I’ve been in this house, I’ve never seen your room. I imagined you messier in your personal space.” Meeting his eyes, she said, “Something I didn’t know about you. Neat as a pin.”
Stepping closer, he cupped her jaw. He stared at her for a long moment and then lowered his mouth to hers. He tasted of lemons. His lips were softer than she thought they’d be. He licked across her lips and she allowed him access.
Erick didn’t grab her, didn’t rush. He took his time and kissed her properly, his tongue coiling around hers. She breathed him in and detected salt air, a hint of sweat, and coconut from the sunscreen they used.
It lasted longer than she expected. When he lifted his face, she smiled. “Thank you. I always wondered what my first kiss would be like. Now I know.”
“What…?” A frown formed along his brow. “Amanda?”
She crossed her eyes. “This girl is hellishly picky.” Stepping back, she smiled. “Don’t worry, Erick. I’ll be okay.”
Leaving his room, she closed the door softly behind her and walked to the bathroom. It took her a long time to get her emotions to settle.
How she loved him.
By the time she left the space, Amanda felt in control again. Erick was part of her plan but she was determined to choose the time and place.
Her first and likely last time with him had to be special.
