“That’s it, come for me, Red.” He let out a shuttering breath. “Fuck. You’re so sexy when you come. The sounds you make, the look you get, the way you feel when you tighten around my cock… so fucking sexy.”

“Fuck,” I cried out as his words sent me plunging over the edge. The sound of his groans and sighs intensified my pleasure. The climax pulsed through me until I had to bite my lip to keep from waking the rest of the house.

“Damn, Mr. Fraser, even over the phone you do things to me no one else ever could.”

“I feel the same. Everything that involves you is amazing.” He sighed as he tried to catch his breath.

“That was the most intense orgasm I’ve ever given myself.”

He chuckled. “I’ll be home tomorrow,” he said and the insinuation in his tone had my center throbbing again.

“I look forward to it.”

The next daywas full of panicked calls from Autumn pack members. Isaac offered to help me, but he had his own calls to field, so I asked Philip. He wasn’t the Autumn Beta, but he’d been working for the Fraser family—a.k.a. the Vinur family—for millennia. Which meant he knew a thing or two about handling a large group of people.

Besides, the Autumn Beta wasn’t the best at his job. The whole shifter hierarchy was way too archaic. The positions are passed down from father to son, but I think the son should have to prove himself first. Seth Martin would have failed that test and someone else could have stepped in.

“I guess I should have taken Liam up on learning the Vinura ways,” I muttered when the phone rang for what felt like the millionth time.

Philip grabbed it before I could, and while he dealt with the caller, I continued to fill spray bottles and water guns with the stinky vinegar and salt concoction. Shifters had been stopping by all day to pick up weapons full of pixie deterrent.

Wallace had brought up a good point during my call with him. If we’re in wolf form when the pixies attack, we’d have no way of protecting ourselves. So, we’d attached a length of rope to each weapon. That way our wolves could carry them around and if we’re attacked, we’d have protection when we shifted back to human.

I looked up at Philip when he hung up the phone. “Everyone okay?” I asked.

“Yes. Pixies attacked the Turners while they were out for a family walk.” He shook his head and his jaw clenched. “We had told everyone not to go out unless absolutely necessary.”

“Were they hurt?”

“The kids got pixed, but their parents had water guns and killed the bugs.” He ran a hand through his hair. It was something I’d never seen him do. I’d never seen him stressed before. He was always so indifferent. “The kids are okay now.”

“Thank you for doing this, Phil,” I said as I moved to stand in front of him. “I’m sorry I’m not better prepared for dealing with the pack.”

“Don’t be silly, Miss Steele,” he said with his creepy grin. And just like that old Philip had returned. “You’re an author, not an Alpha.”

Without thinking about it, I hugged him. He stiffened in surprise. It took a few beats before he returned the gesture, but when he did, he clung to me in a way I hadn’t expected. We held each other for a long while before he stepped back. His hands rested on my hips as he stared into my eyes. I kept my hands on his waist and gave him a small smile.

“You’re good for him,” he said. “It doesn’t matter that Astrid created you. She could have created a thousand Vinuras for him, and none would hold a candle to you. You know how to deal with him. You take care of him.”

“He does the same for me.”

“He needs it more than you.” His grip tightened. “His life story is his to tell, but I will say he’s suffered more pain than you can imagine. You’ve brought him a sense of peace I’ve never seen in him before.”

Tears prickled behind my eyes. “Thank you for telling me this. It makes me happy to know I’m helping him.” I leaned forward and pressed a kiss to his lips. “Thank you, but why are you telling me all of this now?”

“You’ll be leaving soon.” He said it so simply it took me a little while to catch on.

“Ulfurjord?” I asked.

“Yes. You won’t be able to deny her much longer. At least Liam won’t. She’ll demand he take his seat and if he refuses again, she’ll make sure he suffers.”

“She’ll kill me,” I said without having to think about it.

“Exactly.”

“Well, fuck. So much for free will.” I let my hands drop to my sides. “I guess we’ll be moving as soon as this shit is over.”

“That’d be my guess as well.”
