I wasn’t enough.
The two of them joined me as I was about to lose my shit and sink into darkness. They drank their coffee and tea, chatting about everything and nothing while I whipped up some pancakes, keeping my back toward them as much as possible to hide the emotions roiling inside me.
Heaviness settled over me, and no amount of Lily’s giggles or flirting shone light on the garden inside me that sat in dim quietness.
I plastered a smile on my face, but I could feel Grey’s scrutiny from across the table, letting me know I hadn’t fooled him with my pretending all was right in our world.
“Work sucks ass.” Lily pouted.
“So call in sick and spend the day in bed with us.”
Her cheeks flushed at Grey’s words, but she shook her head. “Between the fuck god and his best friend’s thick, juicy dick, I’m out of order for a few days.”
Grey made a noise of appreciation deep in his throat while I snickered at the nicknames regardless of the heaviness in my chest. “When can we see you again?” he asked her.
I jerked my head toward Grey even though the one and done rule had definitely fled the house. He stared at Lily with hearts in his eyes.
She looked at him with the same.
Darkness slithered its way through my mind, and rubbing a hand down over my face, I held my breath, waiting for her answer. Hoping for just one more taste before they realized they didn’t need me in bed with them.
“Next weekend?” Lily suggested.
“The whole weekend?” Grey asked, lifting her hand to trail his lips over her knuckles.
“Um...sure?” That husky voice of hers, once more breathless with need, chubbed my dick up as I released an unsteady exhale.
Grey finally gave me his attention for my agreement, and as usual, I followed his lead. Happily in the moment, even though I knew a shredded heart lay in my future.
I would never be good enough for Lily on my own, didn’t have riches tucked away in the bank like Grey, wasn’t the type of guy who could take her out for a night on the town if she wanted to party until the morning hours.
Their outgoing personalities fit together like two jigsaw puzzle pieces.
A gorgeous couple. Dazzling, I realized, glancing between the two of them. Sexy as hell.
Fuck, my heart hurt.
Grey got up from the table when Lily claimed she had to jet out of there for her shorter late morning shift, but she insisted she’d just take an Uber back to the lounge where we’d left her car.
Lily leaned down to press a lingering kiss to my lips, keeping me in my chair. “Thank you for a wonderful night, Blaine. Next weekend can’t come soon enough.” Her dark eyes sparkled like fireflies in the darkness inside me, bringing a bit of hope that I wouldn’t bend beneath depression’s press.
A minute later, Grey and I sat across from one another again.
Alone.
The sweetness of vanilla had dissolved from the air we breathed, the quietness of the house almost stifling.
“What’s wrong?” Grey asked, breaking the stillness between us. He settled back in his chair, legs spread, one hand cradling the coffee mug on the table in front of him.
Recognizing the determined glint in his eye, I knew I wouldn’t be able to just walk away or toss some bullshit excuses his way.
“I didn’t want her to leave,” I offered one of the truths bouncing around in my head.
“Same.” He blew out a breath.
“I hoped to spend the whole day in bed with the two of you.” I offered him another thought from the recesses of my brain.
One of Grey’s eyebrows popped upward, and those blue eyes of his delved deep inside me like they’d done earlier that morning in bed. “Not just her?” His voice hinted at teasing, but his intense gaze didn’t.
