Page 124 of Seeking Two Lovers

“H-He hurt me. Bad.” Her whispers barely made it through the line.

“Where are you?” I barked the question as the darkness deep inside me began to rise like oozing sewage.

Grey hopped off the bed, moving quickly toward me.

“H-hospital.”

“What happened, Sarah?” I choked out as Grey’s arms slid around my waist from behind, his firm, warm chest giving me something to lean against.

More whimpers and sobs broke in my ears, and I barely contained the angry demands that wanted to escape from my lungs.

I couldn’t fist either hand, couldn’t smash my foot through a wall—because my lovers held me tight, offering shelter from the storm raging inside me.

Muffled noises, then a new voice came over the line. “Is this Blaine Mitchell?”

I swallowed hard at the calm tone in my ear. “Who’s asking?”

“I’m Nina Delmsford, Sarah’s nurse.”

Not a name I recognized from the compound—I had no option but to trust her. “What happened to my sister?” I demanded, my entire body trembling in Grey’s hold.

“She arrived at the ER badly beaten—she miscarried late last evening.”

Fuck.

My eyelids slammed shut, and I slumped into Grey.

Lily’s soft warmth pressed along my front, her cheek atop my pounding heart.

“I-Is she okay?” I rasped around my tight throat.

“Yes, she’s going to be fine,” the nurse assured me. “She said that you’re her next of kin.”

“Yes. Is there anyone else with her?” I asked, thinking of Franklin, the only person she had besides me who cared for her wellbeing.

“No. She arrived alone after eleven last night, and we just settled her into a room a little bit ago.”

A shuddering exhale caved my chest in. “Can I talk to her again, please?”

“Sure thing.”

More muffled fumbling, and sniffles met my ears.

“I’m coming to get you, Sarah.”

“No! No. Please. I-I don’t want you anywhere near here, Blaine. Please. You can’t.”

“What happened,” I finally demanded, my tone firm since she’d calmed down. But I felt anything but stable inside. Were it not for Grey and Lily holding me up, I’d have sunk to the floor and curled into a fetal position.

“He—He caught us together.” Her voice broke, but I waited. “Franklin…”

I scrubbed a hand down over my face, my chest aching from the devastation I heard in her voice, knowing I was powerless to help her from afar.

“Abraham beat him with his fists until he could barely move.”

Fucking monster.

Grey’s hands on my lower belly kept me still, Lily’s kiss over my heart and her clutch on my free hand soothing the emotions wanting to explode from me.
