Chapter Five: Stella

Inhaling, I breathe as steadily as I can when the judge enters the courtroom. Darren sits in handcuffs at a table on the left and my new love sits with his briefcase at the table on the right. Ace promised everything would be okay, but just being in a courtroom still makes me a bit nervous.

Whatever higher power is up there, please help Darren to be proven innocent.

I turn my attention from Darren’s nerve-wracked face to look at Ace. He must’ve heard my eyes shift because he simultaneously gazes at me. I give him a subtle smile and gives me a firm nod which calms the jittery feeling inside me.

We’re on two different sides of the courtroom, but I no longer see Ace as the enemy. Over the past few days, he’s shown me how much he cares about me, and therefore, cares about Darren. We’ve spent every night together in his house or mine, and each night was spent laughing and talking to each other until we fell asleep. Despite worrying about my brother, these past several days with Ace have been some of the best nights that I’ve had in a long time.

“Court is now in session,” a voice calls out to the room and everything grows silent.
