I shake my head, looking over at Anika following my sister. “I suppose your brother dodged a bullet. My own mother thinks so little of me, I bet your mother-”
“Ignore my mother, and that-”
“You know nothing about me, and I have to fight with my sister almost every day. Somehow, I have to find the energy to teach my classes above it all, so I don’t have the energy to work on getting your mother to like me, or have Aiden-”
“Aiden loves you, and-”
“I would like for you to leave. I have better things to do than talk to someone I don’t want to.” I get off the chair, open the door for Lee, then walk away from the living room.
Lee can talk until he’s blue in the face. Right now, the only thing I can think about is one thing and one thing only. Am I pregnant?
Sitting on the couch, I rub my head, then turn to face Anika sitting next to me. She raises her brows at me in question.
“What? It’s not like I have a pregnancy test lying around,” I tell her. This is the first time I’ve ever had a scare like this. I’m careful, always careful. I know how hard it is looking after my sister, never mind having a baby in all that too, and then there is a reason that no man ever sticks around long enough for me to ever take a test.
“I have one… I’ll-”
“Wait, when, what, why do you have one, and you never told me about it?” I ask her, almost demanding for her to tell me why she kept that a secret.
“Last month, I was a day late and got stressed because my dad would kill me, but the lovely month had started, blah, blah, blah. Now come on, let's take the test.” She gets up, pulling me up too and running up the stairs. She gets into her room and pulls out the box with two tests in it, then hands it over to me.
I stare at the box for a moment, scared what this test will show me. If it's negative, is it my way to finally walk away from Aiden? If it’s positive, does it mean I have to get back with Aiden?
“Hey, no matter what comes up, remember we’re here, never going to leave. You get back with Aiden, we will still be here, you don’t get back with Aiden, we will still be here.” Anika stands next to me and takes my hand. “Everything will be okay,” she reassures me, and I give her a small smile, wiping the tear away from my cheeks. Nodding softly at Anika, I walk to the bathroom and see if I’m about to make the biggest decision of my life.
* * *
I make my way up the stairs. This is the first time I’ve come to Aiden’s office, and to be honest, I still didn’t want to come today. But Aiden hasn’t stopped calling, or sending sorry flowers to me, then on top of it all, David and Lee have both decided they need to call me too.
The only way I’m going to get any peace at the moment is to just talk to him, and we have a lot to talk about too.
Then I also have to tell him the biggest news that trumps everything. I’m pregnant. When the plus sign appeared, my stomach dropped. I cried a lot. And continued to cry for two days after, confused about what I want to do.
I thought about it a lot, but this isn’t just my decision. Aiden needs to know about it, and he needs to be on the same page as me.
I look around the office and cuss to myself when I see Aiden’s mother and some other woman walking over to me.
“Mrs. Kane, nice to see you again.” I smile and look over to the woman standing next to her.
“I thought my son was finished with you, so why are you here?” his mum snaps at me, and I roll my eyes at her.
I see David walking over to us, and he gives me a kiss on the cheek. “How are you, Saylor?” he asks and stands almost in front of me, like he’s protecting me from the comments coming my way.
“I’m getting there,” I say quietly. Aiden’s mother hasn’t asked me about my dad, which means she doesn’t care. The less she talks to me, the better, because I’ve gotten no sleep and my emotions are all over the place.
“So are you here to brainwash my son-”
“No, he said if I come to his office and suck on his dick under his desk, he would double my pay.” His mum looks at me with her mouth wide open, and just to add to the punch, I glance between his mother and the woman. “And it’s so big, I might need some extra money,” I say, walking away from them both, and David follows me.
“Saylor, I’m happy you’re here.” I stop when I get far enough from Mrs. Kane and the woman, but they’re still there watching me,
“Where is his office?” I ask, looking around at all the staff working, at their own stations.
“The glazed-out window.” David pointed to the window next to me, “It’s been like that all week. It’s normally on when he has a meeting. But he’s-”
“Is he in a meeting now?” I ask, as I don't want to go in if there are others in the room too.
“He’s on a call, but go in. He... he needs to see you,” David tells me, and for a moment, I just look at the glazed-out window and wonder if this is the best move for me.
