Chapter Seven
Saylor
The moment we got to the new house, I kept my word and let Anika work, while Jason and I unpacked everything.
Jason, to my surprise, has done a lot of work. I really thought he was just going to stand there and tell me I’m doing it all wrong, and this needs to go there, that needs to go there, but no.
“What’s happening with you and sugar daddy?”
“Nothing, like you said. I’m not going to marry him or have his babies. I’m just having some fun.” I can’t help but smile, because God, am I having fun. I’m not even sure who the last man was that made me scream the way he does.
“I’m jealous of you.” Jason pushes me in a playful way, and I start laughing. “With everything you go through with Hayley, you deserve to have some fun.”
I think back to all the times I’ve looked after Hayley myself. My dad was here at the start, but being in the army and how high up in the ranks as he is, it was hard for him to stay for long, so I told him I would look after her. He wasn’t happy about it; he told me that I need to be a normal twenty-year-old girl and go out with my friends, and I told him that if I have learned anything from him, it’s that family always sticks together. No matter how bad the situation gets, we are a team. In that moment, the team needed me, and I was putting on my gear and taking control.
I think that was the first time I saw my dad hide his tears. Told me he was proud of me, and he would look into getting help for Hayley, so I can have some time when it’s just me and my friends.
Three years, and I’ve lost a lot of social workers and caretakers, as Hayley doesn’t like them. Which has made things hard for me, but I’ve been gifted with two amazing friends who have helped me out so much. I will never in a million years be able to repay them for it.
I never really needed a caretaker for her, but she seems to be getting worse. Her personality is changing, and now she’s going through a lot of ups and downs that even I can’t seem to get my head around.
“This new caretaker seems better for her, and at the moment, Hayley doesn’t hate her,” I tell him. The last few I’ve had only lasted about a month before they left.
“That’s good, and you need some time to be able to enjoy yourself. You’re twenty-three, you should be having fun, and I’m going to enjoy it with you.” Jason pours us both some wine.
I tell Jason that I’m not planning on telling Aiden about Hayley, because the moment any guys find out, they leave, and also because I’m not looking for anything more from him. There isn’t really any point in him knowing.
Jason said the same thing, and at first, I felt bad I’m keeping this big part of my life hidden, but for once, I’m thinking about me, and as selfish as it might be, I’m free. Even if it’s only for a night.
“You two have done well.” I see Anika in the kitchen, and me and Jason start shouting at her, that she had no faith in us at all.
“How is the presentation going?” I ask.
“Long, but I should be done for the morning.” She brings a wineglass over with her and puts it in front of Jason to fill up.
“That’s amazing, and I know you will blow him out the park with it.” I raise my glass to her. “To you and getting the dream job.” They both click their glasses with mine and say cheers.
Anika has wanted this job for so long. I still remember when she got the internship there, she cried for happiness and fear at the same time. We celebrated for about a week, since this was the place she wanted to work. This was what she worked her ass off for at Uni, and I know she will work her ass off to get the job.
“When do you go back to work?” Jason asks.
“Tomorrow. All my classes and one to ones, are back to normal.”
“Back to normal life.” Jason raises his glass again, and I lift mine to agree.
I sip on my wine, and for a moment think about how my life is about to be. Hayley will be coming over, Aiden will be here, and I have to juggle work. This might just get a little more crazy than normal.
“Your sugar daddy coming over later?” Anika asks, and I roll my eyes at her.
“First, he’s not my sugar daddy, and I think so. I’ve not heard from him today.” I haven’t messaged him either, but I thought if he had to cancel, he would call me.
“He’s at work-”
“On a Sunday,” Jason cuts her off, and even I’m surprised he’s working on a Sunday.
“Someone fucked up big time and lost him a lot of money. So now he’s working on making it back.” Anika goes into telling us about what has happened, and what she is working on for him.
I never really thought about his workday, but now I do wonder when he sleeps, as it seems all he does is work all the time.
