Chapter One

Saylor

“You must think I’m crazy,” I shout at Anika, as she holds up the tiny black piece of fabric she’s calling a dress. “That’s not even going to cover my ass.” I push the dress out of my way so I can continue to look at the clothes.

I swear she chooses the most ridiculous outfits sometimes. Just once, I would like her to pick an outfit that would look nice on me. She must do it on purpose… I bet she does.

“That’s because you have a huge ass.” She gives my ass a slap as she walks away laughing at me, while I rub the sting on my left cheek. “There must be something here you like. I mean, everything will look sexy on that fine body.” She turns around, then looks me up and down, shaking her head at me.

“What?”

“You make me sick, with your perfect ass, perfect tits, perfect... well, look in the mirror.” She grabs my arms and spins me around to face the mirror on the wall.

“I know, look at me,” I say as we both start laughing. “I keep telling you to come to one of my classes-”

“Yeah, yeah, yeah. Sorry, yoga isn’t my thing.” Anika waves her hand in the air as she turns away from me. “Now, let's find you something smoking hot.”

Shaking my head, I follow her around the store. She has been on my case all week about coming to some uppity work thing with her tomorrow night. I hate the rich business crap. I went to one with her two years ago, and God, it was the most boring thing I’ve ever suffered through, and to top it off, they serve some ridiculous shit they call food. It was not food. It was these gourmet things that just looked wrong, almost inedible. The waiter told me what they were called, and I just rolled my eyes at him. I mean, if it has a fancy name, then I know I’m not eating it.

Anika has been working so hard to finally get a job at this company. It’s all she’s ever wanted to do, and if I have to go to this party to make sure she keeps her job, then I will.

“How about this?” I grab the maxi dress, which is backless, and Anika raises her eyebrows at me, then shakes her head with narrowed eyes. “Fine, you pick something. You know I hate shopping.” I start moaning as she picks up a few dresses for me to try on.

“I think you’re the only girl in the world who hates shopping.” She pushes me into the changing room and hands me an arm full of dresses.

Rolling my eyes at her, I shut the door and hang the dresses up. Seeing if any of them take my liking, I give them a onceover. This is punishment, but the sooner I pick a dress, this nightmare will finish.

I’m one of those shoppers who knows what they want; walk in, walk out. But Anika can spend a whole day here. Trying on outfit after outfit is torture. I’m sure that is why online shopping was invented, so I didn’t have to do this.

Straightening out the blue dress, I open the door. “No,” she says and hands me more dresses, she’s just pulled for me to try on.

How can she say no? She didn’t even look at me.

I look at them, then back at her. Why has she given me these choices? She knows I hate wearing dresses that show my ass off.

“Come on, Saylor. If I had a figure like yours, I would live in these.” She shouts so I can hear her through the closed door.

Pulling the next dress over my head, I tell her, “You have a great figure, so stop selling yourself short.”

She always puts herself down, and she’s not even fat. I mean, she isn’t skinny but not fat either, with amazing curves that I would love to show off. Some days, she will be proud of it, then some asshole will say something stupid to her and it brings her down. I keep telling her that next time a guy says anything to her, she needs to punch them in the face, or I will. No one messes with my friends, because I’m sure I have a few things to say to them too.

“And I love you for always saying that to me.”

“Okay, I think this is the one.” Opening the door, I stand in an off the shoulder black dress that comes to my knees, with a thigh-high split. Even though I don’t like to shop, when I find a dress that looks this amazing on me, I can’t help but smile.

“Oh my God, you’re going to get laid tomorrow night, looking that hot,” she tells me with a laugh. I look in the mirror to make sure it looks good in the back too.

I have to say, I do look hot in this. “I don’t think there is going to be any guy at the party who I would even give a second glance at. The suit look really isn’t my thing. In the whole of London, there has to be someone good enough for me, for us. But they won’t be at that party.” I’ve never been into the man in a suit. I like some roughness, a little bad boy, and so far, a man in a suit, well, I’ve only met the boring ones. They spend most of their time talking about work, or how many cars they have, or how much money they earn in a day. I don’t care. I go back in the dressing room to take the dress off, thankful I don’t have to try on the countless others to find one I like.

“Well, we haven’t found him yet, but it’s not like I want one.” Anika peeps through the door.

“Me neither. I’m a lot happier having fun.” I gather my things, so I can pay for my dress. “Before you say anything, I already have shoes.” We both start laughing, as we share a shoe closet and a good seventy percent of them are hers, but she never says no to me.

“You teaching tonight?”

“Yeah, want to meet for dinner after?” Paying for my dress, we head out and walk to the coffee shop to take away so we can walk around a little more, as Anika wants to get a few other bits for tomorrow night.

This is her dream company to work for, and she has to make a good impression. There is something big happening at her work, and she doesn’t know the ins and outs yet, but she is trying very hard to get on the team. She comes home every night after work saying that the buzz around the office about this secret team is getting crazy, and everyone is trying to figure out what it is.
