“Why didn’t you take Lainy?”

The question came out without thought, exposing my insecurity. I wanted to believe I was wanted, even if it was by a monster, but years of being told how undesirable I was made it difficult.

“The omega with limbs like a twig? I’d snap her in half. You stole my attention the moment I laid eyes on you, little one. You are not a second choice. You are exactly what I wanted.”

There was no way for him to know what I needed to hear, but he’d said it, nevertheless.

Hand still cupping one cheek, fur touched my opposite one, and it took a moment to realize he’d leaned down and pressed the side of his face against mine. There was something so sweet and comforting in the action that my heart spasmed, leaving my lashes wet once again.

Chapter Nine

Mel’cam

Cheek pressed to hers, there was no way for me to miss the salty brine of her tears. Overall, I thought she was taking things rather well, but her tears tore at me.

Huffing a breath to clear my throat, I let it vibrate with a soothing purr. She melted, my arm around her the only thing holding her upright as she shuddered.

Pulling away, I kept my purr steady as I swung the makeshift bag from my shoulder.

“Here, Meaghan. Make a nest for us. It’ll make you feel better.”

I knew the dimness in the cave kept her from seeing much, but I could see her in full detail. The blue of her eyes sparkled as they widened when I pressed the bag into her hand.

“Wha—”

Whatever she’d been about to ask was lost as I took her other wrist, pushing her hand inside the bag to feel her bedding. More tears spilled over her cheeks, the tremble in her body making me worry until a smile lifted her lips.

“You brought it.”

She breathed the statement as her head tipped down, pulling the top blanket from the bag and holding it to her chest. Burying her nose, she drew a deep breath before turning her head to look around, but a crease marred her brow.

“I can’t see. And I’m wet.”

Extending her arms, she pushed the blanket away, her concern bleeding through the joy of having her nesting materials.

“So take off your dress.”

Pink colored her cheeks as her arms crossed protectively over her belly. I pushed on before she could protest.

“You’ll be more comfortable, it’ll give your dress a chance to dry, and,” I closed the space between us, making sure she felt the length of my erection press into her, “I’m going to see you naked anyway.”

Her eyes narrowed, the glare diminished by the fact that it was aimed at my neck. Holding in my chuckle at her poor human vision, I stroked the back of my claws along her cheek before cupping her head once more.

“I’m not letting you leave. I’m patient. I can wait as long as it takes for you to invite me into your nest. I want you too much to allow any other outcome.”

Lips parted, the only expression left on her face was wonder. A spike of pain pierced my heart that I was the first to tell her such things, but I swore she’d never suffer from want of hearing them again. I’d tell her how much she was wanted every day.

Snapping her mouth shut, she straightened, sucking in a deep breath before letting it out in a slow exhale.

“I’d still like some light.”

It was my turn to hesitate. I’d ignored that part of her complaint on purpose.

“This might be easier for you if you can’t see. At least for now.”

I’d turned my head away, looking back toward the cave opening, when she reached out and placed her hand on my arm. Focus drawn back to the little omega, I was surprised to see a soft smile on her face as her fingers played in my fur.

“If you get to see me, I get to see you. We can’t begin…this, by hiding from each other.”
