“That is still to be determined. It is too soon to tell if we are compatible.”

She had to force the words out, and Vax barked a laugh when she finished.

“Oh, I can show you we’re compatible. I’m sure we’ll fit together just fine.”

Her cheeks flamed, the heat rushing down her neck to burn in her chest when his gaze moved over her. There was no doubting his suggestion was meant to be lewd, she just didn’t know if he was purposely trying to rile her, or managing it by chance.

“That, Chancellor Vax, is rude and inappropriate. Sexual inuendoes are frowned upon in polite society.”

Vax laughed again, arms crossing over his chest. She couldn’t help watching the way his muscles bulged beneath his shirt, the bottom edge rising just enough to show a sliver of dark skin between it and the top of his pants.

She gasped again when she noticed the thick outline of his erection pressing against his pants. She told herself to turn away, to pretend she didn’t notice, but her eyes were glued to it as it twitched beneath the fabric.

Her core spasmed in response, though her mind was saying there was no way it was as big as it looked. She’d dabbled a bit in biology and knew just as much about the different aspects of each dynamic as anyone else did, but accepting something of that girth didn’t seem plausible.

“I doubt its polite to gawk at an alpha’s package either, yet here we are.”

His tone was smug, laughter evident in his expression when she finally peeled her eyes away from his groin and returned her gaze to the relative safety of his face.

“I’m sorry. And I was not gawking. And it doesn’t change the fact that I am not comfortable sharing a bed with you. We may assume that you will be claiming me when my next heat comes, but until we are sure, there will be no altering of my physical status.”

She jerked her spine straight, trying to appear as confident in her declaration as she hoped she sounded.

The problem was, he’d put the idea in her head, and curiosity was swirling inside her. Her life had been so bland, it was thrilling to consider doing something her father would disapprove of.

Still, she knew that wasn’t a reason to allow things to happen she didn’t feel ready for yet. Her body may have been sending conflicting signals, but she wasn’t willing to ignore good sense. Vax seemed trustworthy, and maybe even someone she could come to enjoy being around, but he needed to prove it.

“Suit yourself, Princess,” he said with a shrug, turning away from her to flop onto the bed. “I need a little nap before I have to get back to work, so make yourself comfortable.”

Chapter Eighteen

Vax

He hid his face in the crook of his elbow so she couldn’t see the way he was grinning. His chest shook with silent laughter as he pictured the way she’d stared at him after making her declaration.

Sexual inuendoes are frowned upon in polite society.

Apparently she hadn’t picked up that he wouldn’t be considered part ofpolite society.

Still, he was surprised she was a virgin, and he’d had to force himself to back away before he did things he might later regret. It hadn’t been listed on her profile, and he muttered a thanks for that because her price would have been even higher if it had been, and he’d have had no chance of winning her. He had a feeling Suri had left it off on purpose considering she knew what had happened to Elise, all because of the same status.

Virgin.

His cock wept at the thought that Alana was untouched. He wanted to drop to his knees and worship her, show her everything she’d been missing, and make sure she’d never regret him being the only one she’d ever be with. To hell with his plans to wait.

He muffled his groan with the pillow, resisting the urge to grind himself against the mattress. If sexual innuendos were frowned upon, humping the bedding while she stood behind him surely was.

Even though she’d clearly been staring at his erection.

It was a few minutes before he heard her begin to move around. Her steps were slow and quiet, like she thought he might already be asleep and she didn’t want to disturb him. He really did need to get more rest, but there was no way he’d be able to with the throbbing between his legs and Alana’s delicate scent wafting to him. Spending four days trapped together was going to be torture.

He stayed where he was, mentally working through the muscles from his toes up and forcing them to relax. He still wasn’t used to the amount of sitting he did as the Chancellor, and he carried constant tension in his shoulders and neck. Once he’d made it through the muscles in his face and scalp, he let himself continue to lay there for another ten minutes before levering himself upright.

Alana’s gasp drew his gaze straight to her. She perched on the edge of the couch, like she was afraid to sit back and allow herself to sink into the cushion. Her hands rested in her lap, and she’d turned the window behind her on so there was a view of space instead of a blank wall.

Earth was already out of sight, its sun shrinking into the distance.

Standing, he pulled his gaze from her and took the few steps to his desk, settling in the chair and waking the screen embedded in the surface. As useful as his tablet was, he preferred the larger screen.
