“Wait,” I whisper shout. “Are you calling him right now?”

“Mhmmm,” she replies, unphased by my sudden panic.

“Paisley,” I scold. “Isn’t this a conversation you should have inprivate?”

She shrugs as Josh answers the phone, and the tone he uses while greeting her diminishes a little of the doubt I had in my mind about him and his intentions with my friend.

“Are you fucking Renee?” she asks flatly, not returning his enthusiasm.

The line is silent for a moment. “Am Iwhat?”

She rolls her eyes at the phone and brings it closer to her mouth. “Are. You. Fucking. Renee?”

“Hell no,” he snaps. “Lee, where the fuck did that come from?”

Aw, he calls her Lee.

Probably not the time to swoon.

I try to avert my gaze as they hash it out, cringing when Paisley yells, and feeling a little bad for Josh as he tries to explain himself.

“She was just there. I didn’t ask her to come. I sure as shit didn’t intend to go food shopping with her. Sometimes, living in this fucking town makes seeing her unavoidable, babe.”

“Then why not just tell me you ran into her?” she asks, the question being the most logical thing that’s come out of her mouth since their phone call started.

“Because I knew you’d react like this, and it was completely innocent. I barely even spoke to her.”

“Right,” she scoffs.

“Lee. I would never lie to you about something like this. You know I’m fucking crazy about you.”

She softens at his words and lowers the phone slightly.

Glancing my way, she silently asks for my opinion.

I shrug and nod.

I believe him, from what I’ve heard.

Truly, I think they need to discuss this in person, but who doesn’t love a bit of afternoon drama? This shit was better than an episode of a reality TV show.

“Fine,” she says. “I’ll see you later.”

“Don’t you fucking dare hang–”

She hangs up and tosses the phone to the dirt beside her. Leaning back on her hands, she closes her eyes. “Well, that’s settled then,” she says, completely unphased.

I burst into a fit of laughter at her mood change, watching her in astonishment. “You’re a little crazy, you know that, yeah?”

“Oh yeah,” she replies, not even bothering to open her eyes.

???

“Mum, you home?,” I call out as I close the front door to her house behind me, breathing in the smell of freshly made apple pie.

After stopping home and finding my place empty, I decided to pop over here before calling Pax to see where he got to.

“We’re in the kitchen,” she replies.
