“She was hurt really bad,” he said after a moment, “and she lost a lot of blood.”

Lisandra pulled his face back and their eyes locked again. “Okay,” she said, “but you said she was going to be fine.”

He nodded. “She will be stronger than ever when she wakes up.”

Her eyebrows shot up and her eyes went wide. “You changed her?”

“It was the only way.”

She nodded, but her eyes dropped from his, and her body went tense.

“Hey,” he lifted her chin and waited for her to look at him again. “She was still aware when I gave her my blood. She accepted it willingly.”

“But she wouldn’t have had to make that choice if it wasn’t for me. I should have let her go. She wanted a human life and the chance to have a family.”

“This was not your fault, love. She loves you. I have seen how stubborn she is. I doubt there is anything you could have done to convince her to leave.”

“Can we just go home now? I need to be there for her when she wakes up.”

He smiled. “Of course, but we should probably pick Allison up on the way.”

She smacked his arm, and he rubbed away the sting.

“Where the hell did you leave her?”

“She is safe, I assure you. I hid her beneath some very thick trees.”

“Ricardo!”

She took off towards the forest and he ran to catch up, staying by her side until he spotted the place where he had left Allison who was still asleep. Lisandra dropped to her knees beside her, and her hands immediately went to where the wood had stabbed Allison in her abdomen. When she looked back at him, she was smiling.

“Her wound is gone,” she said.

“Yes.”

She jumped up and hugged him hard. “Thank you for saving her.”

“She is your family, and so she is also mine. I will always do whatever I can to keep our family safe.”

Her smile was so bright he was surprised it didn’t blind him. “I know you will.” She gave him a chaste kiss, and when she pulled back, they were both smiling. She glanced down at Allison’s sleeping body, then back up at him. “Now let’s go home.”

ChapterThirty-Two

Lisandra

Allison slept for two days, and Lisandra did not leave her side. Ricardo sat in a chair by the window and waited with her. He had already made sure their stockpile of blood was fully replenished because she was so nervous that she was acting like a mother hen, fussing over them having enough blood for Allison’s initial thirst when she woke up, and constantly fluffing her pillows and making sure she was covered up and comfortable in the bed. She even gave her a bath, something Allison would probably give her shit over later, but Allison deserved to be cared for. Ricardo stayed with them and did anything she asked of him, which only made her love him even more. She knew she was being overbearing, but if the roles were reversed and Allison had been able to be with her through her change, she knew Allison would have taken care of her the same way.

She was exhausted, but she just rubbed her eyes, refusing to let them close, afraid she would miss the moment when Allison woke up.

“You need to rest, my love,” Ricardo said.

He stood from his chair and made his way over to her side of the bed. When he sat down, he pulled her hand into his, and she let him. The urge to crawl into his lap and let him hold her while she slept was nearly overwhelming, but she couldn’t sleep until Allison woke up.

“You can sleep, Lisandra,” he said. “I will be right here with you both. If she wakes, I will wake you up.”

She squeezed his hand. “I know you will, but I just can’t. Not until she wakes up. I know she is healing, I see that, and I see the changes in her, but I guess there is a part of me that won’t believe she is okay until I see her open her eyes and hear her tell me herself.”

“I’m fine.”
