Allison arched a brow. “Why more than one… oh, I see.”

Lisandra smiled, her fangs fully descended, but with all the blood in the air there was no getting that part of herself under control. Maybe when she’d had four hundred years of practice like Ricardo, but not as a newbie vampire. She was surprised Allison had been able to pull her out of her blood thirst. She had no idea when the last time she had blood was because she was unsure how long Jameson has held them captive since she’d been knocked out with some kind of poison twice. Thoughts of Ricardo flooded her mind again. He would have been proud of her; told her how strong she was to resist feeding when she was so close to fresh blood and so thirsty. She knew he was looking for her. Their connection, although they may have been far apart, was still strong, and she felt his agony at her loss. Felt his anger and determination, too, but she couldn’t wait for him to find them. She still had no clue how far Jameson and Melina had taken them. No, she couldn’t wait for a knight in shining armor. This time, she would have to save them, and she was prepared to do whatever it took to make sure they got free and remained safe. She would not hesitate to take out anyone who threatened her and the people she loved again.

“I’m going to hold my breath to make it easier not to attack you,” she said.

Allison shook her head with a smirk. “Oh, please do. I love you and all, but if someone’s going to be snacking on me, drinking my blood isn’t what I have in mind.”

She smiled. “You’re ridiculous. Now be still.”

Allison nodded, a big smile on her face, but then she did what Lisandra asked and held still. Without breathing, Lisandra moved closer to Allison, then she jumped up and grabbed ahold of the plank just in front of where the chains that held Allison hung. She held the plank with one arm wrapped around it and grabbed the chains where they wrapped around the wood. In one quick yank, the chains snapped. Allison yelped when she began to fall, but Lisandra was on the ground, catching her friend in her arms in a flash.

“I don’t think I’m ever going to get used to that,” Allison said.

“To what?”

“You moving at the speed of light. I swear I didn’t even see you move at all.”

“Well, you can bask in your awe of my amazing speed later. Right now, I need to get you out of here.”

Allison looked from her to the ground. “Do you think you could put me down first? I don’t need anyone seeing you carrying me like a damsel in distress. Shit’s bad for my reputation.”

She shrugged, but didn’t move to put Allison down. “I don’t know. I think this could be good for you. That ego of yours is getting so big it is even hard for me to hold you up.”

Allison slapped her arm. “I’ll show you a big ego. Now put me down, dammit.”

She bent to put Allison down, then stood back and gave her friend a minute to right herself. Allison was a little wobbly when she first released her, but that wasn’t surprising after the way they had been hanging from those rafters.

Lisandra held her arms out, ready to catch Allison if needed. “You alright?”

“Yeah.” Allison held her arms to the side like she was trying to balance. “Just have to get my land feet working again.”

“Maybe I should carry you. I know you’ve got to be in pain, and we need to be fast, anyway. I’m sure it won’t be long before Jameson comes to check on us. I’m surprised he left us alone this long.”

Allison smirked. “I’m not. He always was an overly cocky little shit.” Lisandra stepped forward, but Allison held her hand up between them. “And, no, I don’t want to be carried. I’m a big girl.”

“Fine,” she agreed, “for now, but if there is even a chance of you getting caught, I’m snatching you up and hauling ass.”

Allison nodded.

She grabbed Allison’s hand and moved towards the door. That was when the wind sent a gust that carried into the shack, through the cracks in the wood planks, and under the door. Before the door opened, she already knew what, or who, was waiting for them on the other side. Apparently she was going to have the chance to live up to her declaration of protection because she knew she wasn’t going to get Allison and herself out of there without a fight. And this time she would make sure the asshole who had just opened the door to the shack could not come after her ever again.

ChapterTwenty-Nine

Ricardo

Melina was giving him the runaround. He wasn’t sure when she had decided she was smarter than him, but he was sick of it. It was time to remind her he was not someone to be messed with. With his free hand he grabbed her hair and moved back just enough to slam her head into a nearby tree, making the tree whine as bark fell around them from the impact. “I said do not lie to me,” he ground out through his teeth.

“Please,” she said. “I’m taking you to her. That’s what you wanted.” She sounded like a mouse, and it made him angry. Weakness had never been something Ricardo liked or disliked, but right then, the weakness in Melina’s voice made the monster he’d been keeping in a cage rattle its silver chains. It wanted out, and for once he wanted to let it out. Wanted to find the satisfaction of revenge by hurting Melina for the pain she had caused Lisandra.

Silence passed between them for a few moments while Ricardo worked to hold in his monster, and Melina just stared at him bug-eyed and afraid. It was the first time he’d ever smelled fear on her. There had been no fear when he’d nearly drained her dry earlier. Even when she was human and he went after her, there was no fear. She’d been ruthless from the beginning, and he’d not bothered to notice until it was too late.

He glared at her. “You think I am dumb enough not to realize what you’re doing?”

Her eyes darted away. “I’m not doing anything.”

“You are wasting my time. Running us in circles!”

“I thought it would give you time to cool off before you have your precious one back. I’m in no hurry to die.”
