Jameson’s jaw went taut, but he let go of Melina’s arm and stepped away from her without saying another word. If she didn’t hate her so much, Lisandra would have been impressed with the way Melina had handled him. It was something she herself had never been able to do, at least not when she had been human.
Melina turned to glare at her before looking back over at Jameson. “If you’re going to keep her alive, you need to chain her up. If she gets to Ricardo and he finds us, there won’t be anyone who can save us.”
“Huh,” Jameson crossed his arms. “Speak for yourself. I’m not worried about that asshole. I can handle myself.”
Melina laughed coldly. “You really are dumb, aren’t you? Ricardo is centuries old. It is a miracle we got away from him, but I don’t have enough of the herbs left to make a dose that will take him down again. He is stronger than all of us put together, and if he finds them here with you, he will make it rain with your blood. So, if you want to live, you need to chain them up and put them somewhere a little less in the open.”
“Whatever,” Jameson whined.
Lisandra couldn’t stop herself from laughing. “You sound like a spoiled child who was just toldnofor the first time. I can’t believe I never noticed it before. You are just like a rotten child.”
Jameson stomped past Melina, bent down, and grabbed Lisandra by her hair. He snatched her up from the ground and grabbed her face, squeezing it tightly in his hand. “Watch your fucking mouth, Bitch!”
She didn’t react, refusing to give him the satisfaction. She would play nice enough to keep Allison alive, but she wasn’t going to let him get to her, not like he had before. She wanted him to know he had no control over her, not real control anyway. That would be enough to drive him crazy, and that anger would cause him to make a mistake. When he did, she would be ready to take advantage and get her and Allison away from him. It would be best to do it when Melina was gone again, though, so she looked down so she wouldn’t piss him off any more and cause a chain reaction that lead to a worse situation for Allison and her. She didn’t miss Melina rolling her eyes behind his back, though.
“I don’t have time for this,” Melina said. “I just came to make sure you hadn’t done anything stupid like letting one of them leave.”
Lisandra smiled. “In such a hurry to leave when you don’t have anyone to go home to? Even Jameson doesn’t seem to want you around.”
Melina slapped her in the face, her hand moving so fast Lisandra barely saw it coming, but still she had been prepared. Instead of showing any kind of pain, she just laughed. Melina’s eyes turned black and Lisandra could hear her grinding her teeth together. She was pissed, but who could blame her. She knew what Lisandra said was true, even if she wasn’t willing to admit it to herself.
Melina looked at Jameson again. “You better get this slut locked up out of my sight or I’ll be the one to kill her, and you won’t have a chance to get whatever you want out of her first.”
“I’ve already got a spot set up for them,” he said. “Don’t worry.”
Lisandra did not like the sound of that. She had hoped he was planning to keep them in the house or building. Without Melina around, it wouldn’t take her long to find a way to get past Jameson on his own. She just had to wait until he was far enough away from Allison for her to not get caught up in a fight between them. Being taken to another location might prove to put added kinks in her plan. She had to get them out of there, and she had to do it fast. Melina’s words were rolling around in her head and she didn’t like their implication at all.I’ll be the one to kill her.If she didn’t get them away from Jameson soon, she wasn’t sure they would survive at all. Before she had a chance to make a move, she felt a familiar prick, and it was lights out again.
ChapterTwenty-Six
Ricardo
Ricardo had no intentions of waiting around for Melina to come back. If he hadn’t been so caught up in his head, reminiscing over his guilt and anger with the monster she had become, he would have followed her when she took off. Still, he knew he should be able to follow the path left by her scent, so he went out to the woods behind his house again and tried to pick up her scent.
It didn’t take long to find her in a small house on the outskirts of town, approximately ten miles from his house. Despite his best efforts, hope consumed him when he saw the yellow house with its white picket fence. He wanted Lisandra to be in the house so badly he ignored the fact that Melina’s was the only scent he’d picked up on anywhere near the house.
She sat in an oversized chair pretending to read a book in the far corner of the living room. Ricardo didn’t waste a moment flashing across the house, and he knocked the book from her hand before he snatched her up by her throat and pushed her against the wall.
“Where is she?” he growled.
She tried to get her fingers beneath his at her neck but failed, so her voice was nothing but a rasp when she responded. “I. Don’t. Know.”
Pulling back, he slammed her into the wall again. “Liar!”
“No. Jameson moved them. I shouldn’t have trusted him.”
“You must think I’m a fool.” He tightened his grip on her neck. “Now, tell me where she is.”
She opened her mouth, but no sound came out, so he forced himself to loosen his grip so that she could answer. He had no patience for her lies. He needed to find Lisandra before that psycho ex of hers did something to her that she wouldn’t be able to come back from.
“If you let go, I’ll tell you,” Melina gasped.
“Fine,” he said through gritted teeth, “but you would be wise not to try anything, Melina. My patience has run out.”
Releasing her throat, he took one step back.
“I don’t know where they are,” she started. When he moved to clench her throat again her again, she held up her hand. “Let me finish,” she said. He nodded. “I haven’t been able to find their location. I think he has them on the move. But I was able to get him to answer my call. You were right. She’s with him. Just not the way you think.”
“What does that mean?”
