He pushed the hair behind her ear and cupped her face. “Letting her live is what was not easy. Had it not been for you, she never would have walked out of here tonight.”

“I think you underestimate yourself.”

“No,” he shook his head. “I would kill anyone if they hurt you without a second thought. I may want to stop killing people for their blood, but I will never be able to contain the part of myself that needs to keep you safe.”

It wasn’t something she should enjoy hearing him say, but something about his need to protect her filled a void that had built inside of her when she’d spent her days trying to protect herself from the first man who had claimed to care about her. It was still strange to her to have someone show her what it could be like to be loved by someone who would do anything to keep her safe. This is what love is supposed to be like, she thought. Nothing like the controlling violence that Jameson’s “love” had brought into her life for so long. She knew the danger might be gone for the moment, but she was sure Melina was not going to stay out of their lives for good. Still, she wasn’t prepared to walk away from the very real bond that had developed between her soul and Ricardo’s. For the time being, she was going to enjoy what they were building together and pray it wouldn’t get ripped away.

With another quick kiss, she wrapped her arms around his waist and smiled at him. “I don’t want to think about Melina anymore. I think we should just go back to bed.”

A big smile spread across his handsome face before he bent to lift her into his arms. “That’s the best idea I’ve heard all day.”

She laughed, and in a flash they were back in the bedroom, and Ricardo had all of their clothes removed and he was slowly inching his way up her body, one kiss at a time. Lisandra moaned with a smile. The day was definitely looking up.

ChapterSeventeen

Lisandra

Bam!

Ricardo and Lisandra both jumped out of bed, canines extended, ready to fight. Lisandra doesn’t miss the way he puts himself in front of her, and she’s surprised how she is able to both appreciate his need to defend her while simultaneously readying herself for a fight. If only she’d had the same multitasking skills when she was a human, she might have deciphered a way to safely escape Jameson’s clutches a lot sooner than she did. Her gaze never left the door where the sound that had woken them came from, so she didn’t miss the way Allison’s facial expressions changed from fear, to shock, to smiling, and then angry in a matter of moments.

“I saw Melina leave here hours ago,” Allison said, her arms crossed and eyes narrowed on the two of them. “She was cussing all the way down the driveway. I figured you would call or walk over to the guest house and let me know what the bitch was up to. But nope.” She threw her arms up in the air. “I see now why you were too busy to come fill in your best friend.”

Allison shot a death stare at the two of them. It didn’t matter that Allison was a human and Lisandra was a vampire, that look still made Lisandra cringe. Allison was a hellcat, and Lisandra didn’t think anyone, even a vampire, held a chance in hell against her if she really set her mind to something. Ricardo’s stance relaxed, and he stepped forward towards Allison.

“I sent Melina on her way. I won’t risk anyone’s safety while she figures out the person she wants to be. I’m sorry it took me so long to see that this transition would not be smooth for her.”

“Not smooth for her, ha,” Allison gaffed. “That’s a funny way of saying she’s a spoiled bitch who likes killing people and has her mind made up to kick Lisandra out of your life.”

Ricardo looked away from Allison and Lisandra glared at her friend. Allison was right, but sometimes Lisandra wished she didn’t have to be so blunt. “It is possible,” Ricardo said quietly.

“Possible?” Allison rolled her eyes. “I thought vampires were supposed to have superior vision. You’d have to be blind to see it any other way.”

Ricardo turned back to Allison and Lisandra could see the way his eyes changed. They were nearly black, and the hard look he gave Allison gave Lisandra chills. “She will not harm Lisandra, or you.” His knuckles turned white where he was flexing his fists.

Allison watched him for a moment, then nodded her head and Lisandra finally relaxed beside him. “Good. Just needed to know you were prepared to do whatever is necessary to protect Lis.”

“I’m glad you saw what you needed,” Lisandra glared at her friend. “Do you think you can stop the interrogation now?”

Allison smirked at Lisandra, then turned her attention back to Ricardo and ran her eyes down his body before a smile covered her face, and it finally hit Lisandra that they were both still naked.

“Oh, I can see everything now,” Allison said with a big smile. “I think I’m starting to understand why you’re so keen on sticking this out while he tries to rein in his vamp bitch, Lis.”

A new kind of heat rushed through Lisandra. A green-eyed-monster kind of heat that brought out an anger she’d never felt towards another woman, let alone her best friend. Without thinking, she moved around, shoved Ricardo behind her. She leaned in towards Allison, her canines descended, and a low, startling growl rumbled up her throat. Her friend’s eyes grew wide before she bent with her hands on her knees like she was trying to support herself and burst into laughter.

“Did… you… just. Oh my God! You totally just growled at me for checking out your boyfriend’s junk!”

Allison was nearly hysterical, she was laughing so hard. Lisandra snatched the sheets off the bed, and quickly covered both herself and Ricardo, glaring at her friend the whole time.

It took a few minutes, but Allison eventually stopped laughing and her laughter was replaced by a stern glare once again. “Seriously, Lis, can we talk?” Her eyes shot to Ricardo, then back. “Alone.”

Lisandra cringed internally. This wouldn’t be the first time Allison had pulled her away from a man for a one-on-one, and something told her this chat wasn’t to tell her how lucky she was to have met Ricardo. Allison was overprotective, but her choice in men in the past had made that a good thing. Now, in her current relationship and introduction to life as a vampire, things were far more complicated than dealing with a psycho-abusive boyfriend, and she wasn’t sure she was ready to hear Allison’s unfiltered opinion.

Ricardo moved to walk past her. “I’ll give the two of you some privacy.”

Allison held up her hand. “Actually, I’ve got a casserole in the oven in the guest house. We can talk there while I have some breakfast. Not all of us can survive on refrigerated blood.”

Lisandra bent and picked up her clothes from the floor. “Let me throw some clothes on and I’ll be right there.”
