Securing the seatbelt around me, he closes the door at my side.

“I don’t believe this,” I murmur as I watch several men climbing into the cars in front of us and behind us. “They’re all going to follow us?”

Raiden settles in his seat and starts the car.

“You’re not aware of this,” he says as we start moving down the empty street. “The Black Widow came to attack me mere hours after we brought you to Dr. Lawson’s clinic. They might’ve been after you as well but we’d never know for sure. Their leader didn’t leave any of them alive. I got lucky that one time but I wasn’t going to take any more risk.”

He doesn’t know it yet but it was Callahan who sent those men after me.

“Is that the reason you stayed back?” I ask, staring at him. “Dr. Lawson told me you haven’t slept or eaten over the past two days. She’s worried about you too, you know.”

“There’s no way I’m leaving you unprotected,” he says through gritted teeth. His calmness disappears as he grips the steering wheel. “I hate that you’re unsafe because of our enemies.”

“None of this is your fault.”

“It is.”

Raiden is needlessly feeling guilty. I’m the real reason the Black Widow attacked their home. I want to tell him the whole truth but decide to wait a little longer.

Everyone needs to know about Callahan being the leader of the Black Widow. He’s hiding a lot of secrets, including my true identity.

My hands tighten into fists as I stare out at the road ahead. Callahan is the one and the only enemy we need to destroy.

My gaze swings toward the clock in the corner. It’s already past midnight but neither Caleb nor Damon has come into my bedroom to check up on me. A frown twists my mouth as I stare at my right leg that juts out at an odd angle.

The assholes who attacked our home beat me up badly enough to break my ribs and damage the tendons in my right leg. Every movement hurts. Even fucking breathing hurts.

Thanks to the bastards, I’ve been reduced to spending all my time in bed since the attack.

Caleb and Damon are working round the clock to secure our home. They’re vetting each new recruit. They’re also overlooking a group of builders who are busily working through the night to repair the damage to the trainee dorms.

The Black Widow killed our men, destroyed our residential buildings, and left behind a chaotic mess for us to clean up. I don’t even want to think about all the official reports my mates have to write and submit to the higher-ups.

Caleb and Damon haven’t come up to see me since they left this morning which can mean only one thing. They haven’t come home yet.

I pick up my phone and look through the short replies they’ve sent me throughout the day. Neither Caleb nor Damon mentioned when they’ll be coming home tonight. Letting out a sigh, I throw my phone away and pick up the book I’d been reading.

After reading the same passage for the past fifteen minutes, I toss the book aside and give up. Nothing can distract me from worrying about my mates.

Caleb assured me that Iris is safe but it’s hard not to worry.

The Black Widow bastards left me hurting and nearly unconscious. I remember Iris shaking me and calling out my name but nothing afterward.

When my consciousness returned, I found myself lying on a cot in one of St. Nikolas’s public wards. Several other wounded soldiers lay around me, sustaining varying degrees of injuries.

Caleb and Damon refuse to tell me what happened to Iris.

Every time I’ve asked about her, they’ve glossed over it, telling me not to worry, that she’s safe. Raiden has been watching over her since the incident and hasn’t come home even once.

All I know is that she’s recuperating at some clinic. I wish I could go see her but my stupid, broken body has become a hindrance.

I have half a mind to throw a tantrum to force Caleb into taking me to her but I know he’s too busy managing everything. It’d be selfish of me to ask him when he’s shouldering the weight of so many responsibilities.

The sound of a turning knob pulls my attention toward the door.
