I can’t take it anymore. He shouldn’t be smiling like that when he’s been starving for two days.
“We’re going home right now,” I say, throwing off the blanket covering me. “I’m cooking us all a big meal and—”
“Iris, don’t,” Dr. Lawson says at once, lunging forward to catch me as my knees wobble. “Don’t be so reckless, omega!” she growls as she steadies me on my feet. “You have no idea what we’ve had to do to keep you alive.”
“Sorry,” I mutter, feeling the tug of an IV line that’s connected to a drip bag.
“You’re not going anywhere until you’ve had a thorough checkup and some solid food,” she says, injecting a sliver of dominance into her voice.
“I’ll make sure she eats,” Raiden says, loyally coming to my rescue.
“Please wait outside for now,” she orders. “You can see her again after I’m done with the checkup.”
Raiden winks at me. “See you in a bit,” he says as he quickly leans in to peck my cheek. Grinning, he walks out of the room.
“Can’t you tell me who did this?” Dr. Lawson asks when we’re the only ones in the room.
I shake my head. “He’s too powerful,” I say in a low, rage-filled voice. “He’s a high-ranking military official. Even the cops won’t have the power to touch him. Raiden and his brothers are the only ones who can do something to stop him.”
“He could’ve killed you,” she says in a grim tone. “Your mates don’t know about it but the drug he gave you caused some internal bleeding. Your attacker used a drug that’s been banned for decades. The government was thorough in destroying the manufacturers and suppliers to stop this sort of violence against omegas. I’ve personally never come in contact with a patient who’s been subjected to it. The only reason I knew about the drugs is because of the few history lessons we were taught at medical school.”
My mind goes to the twin sisters who tried to bathe me. Those women were still living in the past, believing that betas have no purpose in life but to follow an alpha. As for omegas, we were nothing more than an alpha’s possession.
I’m not surprised Callahan had access to drugs that have been banned for decades. He’s been single-handedly leading a terrorist organization that wants to disbalance the peaceful society we’ve built over the years.
Dr. Lawson moves closer and starts pressing the diaphragm of a stethoscope along my chest. “Breathe deeply,” she says.
I obey her while my mind churns with the facts I’ve learned since the night Callahan kidnapped me. He must’ve been absolutely sure of keeping me captive without anyone discovering his real identity.
I have no idea how Raiden knew where to find me. The manor was located on top of a hill with no towns close by. I remember seeing nothing but deep woods all around it.
“You must take the supplements I give you along with a good diet that’s rich in protein and iron,” Dr. Lawson says, breaking me out of my thoughts.
I give a nod. “I need to get stronger,” I say, agreeing. “I can’t let Raiden and the others get hurt because of me.”
Dr. Lawson gives me a rare smile. “You’re lucky to have found them,” she says. “Not all alphas care for their omegas this way.”
“I know,” I say. “Even my parents wouldn’t have ...” I suddenly fall quiet.
My parents...The image of that strange woman who resembled me comes alive in my mind. I think of the painting where she was standing with her mate.
Callahan said they were my parents but he didn’t mention how they died or how I came to be with the people I call ‘mom’ and ‘dad’ now. Deep inside, I know I shouldn’t believe him. He could’ve easily fabricated the photographs and paintings to confuse me.
“Are you okay?” Dr. Lawson asks as she steps away from me.
“I feel much better,” I say, focusing my attention on her. “I don’t feel any pain or discomfort. Do you think I can leave with Raiden today?”
“Why don’t you stay here for the night and leave tomorrow morning?”
My gaze flickers toward the windows. That’s when I realize the sky outside is dark.
“Raiden will end up staying awake another night if I stay here,” I say. “He needs to rest or he’ll end up being sick. More importantly, there’s something I must tell him about the man who kidnapped me. It can’t wait.”
“Can you promise me that you’ll look after yourself?” she asks, thrusting the weight of her keen gaze on me.
I nod. “I promise. I hate being powerless.” I can never forget the way Callahan subdued me so easily. All he had to do was bark out a command and my omega instincts would make me bend to his will.
I glance up at the woman before me. “Is there any kind of drug out there that can make an omega less willing to carry out an alpha’s command?”
