I spot Julian waiting for me in the corridor outside.
A sliver of anxiety snakes around my gut. What could be so urgent that he had to come up here instead of waiting for me downstairs?
Reaching him, I stare up at him. “What’s wrong?”
For a fleeting second, I think he’s grinning. Next second, he grabs my hand and pulls me alongside him. “Come with me.”
I follow him down the stairs and along the third-floor corridor, wondering what he’s up to.
“Why are we going that way?” I ask as he leads me along a rarely-used hallway.
“Patience,” he mutters so softly that I think he’s talking to himself.
He comes to a halt outside a nondescript door and stares at me with a crazed smile on his lips. “Tada!” he shouts and throws open the door.
I spot Caleb in the far corner of the strange room. A smile blossoms on his lips as he comes closer to us.
“What are you waiting for?” Julian says with a mischievous grin. “Come inside your bedroom.”
“Mybedroom?”
I step inside the room and I’m immediately calmed by the creamy, pale lavender walls. The furniture and curtains are a shade of soothing cream and deeper lilac.
“What do you think?” Caleb asks.
“It’s beautiful,” I say, slowly moving closer to the large bed that takes up the central part of the room. “Did you know purple is my favorite color?”
Caleb chuckles and nods. “I took a trip to your old room for inspiration.”
Cushions line the headboard of the bed. To my surprise, I spot some familiar, worn ones among the new, shiny pillows.
“Did you bring them from my home?” I ask, picking up one of my favorite cushions and hugging it.
“Yeah. I wanted you to be comfortable here.”
“This is so great. Thank you!” Dropping the cushion on the bed, I throw my arms around Caleb’s neck.
“Hey! Stop hogging all the credit,” Julian shouts, coming over to us.
Stepping away from Caleb, I look toward Julian. “Did you both plan this for me?”
“Actually, the credit goes to Caroline,” Julian says with a mild cringe. “She’s the one who reminded us that we’re still keeping you in the attic.”
“Mom asked me to get your old clothes and stuff from your home,” Caleb says in a low voice. A strange emotion washes over him and it’s a second before I realize it’s guilt. “I’m sorry it took us so long to prepare this room for you. We should’ve done it the moment you came to us.”
I chuckle and shake my head. “Forget the stupid past,” I say. “Back then, we didn’t even know what we meant to each other.”
“The present and the future belong to us,” Julian says with a sincere look in his violet eyes. “We’ll make the best of them.”
“That’s right!” I say, hugging him tightly. “But, when did you do all this? This room is on the same floor as your bedrooms. I’ve been going in and out of all your rooms but had no idea you guys were preparing this place for me.”
Julian’s grin broadens. “I sneaked in here when you went to the gym,” he says. “I used those hours to paint the walls.”
“That’s why you’ve been smelling like paint and oil!” I blurt as realization dawns on me.
Julian laughs and pecks my lips. “You’ve been terribly sweet not to mention a thing about it.”
“I thought you were using some kind of pain medication!”
