“You never know,” I say with a shrug.

“If you had any evidence, you’d have used it against me by now,” Callahan says, smirking. “The fact that I’m still here is proof of that. You have nothing against me, Captain.” Stepping forward, he lets his shoulder collide against mine before walking down the hallway.

The wild wolf inside me rears, baring its fangs.

The man who hurt Iris and Julian is right here. He’s showing me his back, goading me to attack him.

I can’t help Iris if he turns me into a fugitive, I tell myself and punch at the elevator panel. I hate letting him go but know that I have to lose this battle to win the war against him.

The elevator doors slide open.

Stepping in, I press the button that’d take me to the basement garage.

When the elevator opens up again, I stride out into the well-lit and deserted area. Unlike daytime, it’s mostly empty.

My gaze settles on the few vehicles parked here. Callahan’s car must be one of them.

Childish acts won’t make him repent, I tell myself, suppressing the urge to damage his car.

Exhaling a heavy sigh, I reach my car, climb in, and step on the gas.

Despite the chilly weather, I roll down the window.

A frigid breeze blows in, lifting my dark red strands off my forehead. I hoped the fresh air would cool my rage but it does nothing.

Callahan’s mocking grin keeps flashing in my mind, heightening my frustration.

I know Iris is safe at home but a nagging feeling tells me to double-check. Grabbing my phone, I call her.

Her phoone rings but stays unanswered.

Maybe she’s already in bed, I reason. Unable to keep myself from worrying, I call up Julian next.

To my distress, he doesn’t answer either. Anxiety snakes around my throat, choking the breath out of me.

I step on the gas harder, racing toward home.

A sliver of relief flows through me when I get near the perimeter of our estate. Everything is quiet and still around the gates. Familiar guards patrol the area and salute me the moment they spot my car.

Despite knowing everything’s fine, I still can’t suppress my mad urge to see Iris and make sure she’s safe with my own eyes. Driving through the open gates, I speed toward the mansion.

Bringing the car to a stop, I climb out and hurry toward the house.

Distant echoes of an ancient grandfather clock ring out in the hallway as I step inside the entrance hall. It’s close to midnight, so it’s not a surprise to find the place deserted.

Moving further inside, I take the staircase and head up to Julian’s bedroom.

Pushing the door open, I peek in and find Julian sleeping in his bed. Despite not finding Iris by his side, I’m relieved to see he doesn’t need to sleep in a sitting position anymore. His broken ribs must be healing for him to be able to lie down again.

“Where is she?” I hiss as my frustration peaks. Pressing a hasty kiss onto Julian’s forehead, I walk out of the room.

Making my way back to the staircase, I head up to the topmost floor of the house. My feet follow a familiar path and stop outside the attic.

Wrenching the door open, I gaze all around the darkened room.

It takes a moment for my eyes to adjust to the shadows lurking in every corner but I finally find Iris. She’s lying on the bed and doesn’t stir as I step closer to her.

My heartbeat races at the sight.
