“We need to keep an eye on her,” I say in a grim tone. “We can’t let her get so obsessed with revenge that she stops caring about her health.”

Raiden nods. I can tell he’s as worried about her as me.

We will hunt him down for you, I silently make a vow to Iris. There’s no way we’ll ever let a threat like Callahan walk free for long.

Since it’s past ten in the evening, most of the staff have left the headquarters’ premises. Stifling a yawn, I walk down the deserted corridor that leads toward the elevators.

I’ve been drowning in a sea of paperwork over the past week that kept me chained to my desk until late at night. For the first time in days, I’m going to be able to go home, sleep in my bed, and wake up after the sun comes out.

I’ve missed Iris and Julian despite talking to them over the phone every day. It’s been far too long since I’ve inhaled their delicious scents and felt their touch on my skin. My stomach growls, making me yearn for one of Iris’s home-cooked meals.

I quicken my pace, almost running down the empty hallway.

The elevators come into view but I halt in my steps.

A familiar figure is walking toward me. His dark gaze meets mine and a mocking grin comes onto his tan face.

Nox Callahan comes to a stop before me. “Hello, Captain Solveig,” he says, extending his hand toward me.

I resist taking his hand because if I grabbed it, I’d end up ripping his arm off.

Cold chuckles escape him. “How rude,” he says, digging his hand into his pocket.

“What are you doing here?” I hiss through clenched teeth.

“Isn’t that a silly question to ask a senior officer?”

“I know who you are,” I say, seething. “Iris has told us everything.”

His grin widens as he leans toward me. “What could she have told you?”

Lunging forward, I push him against the wall and wrap my fingers around his neck. “You’re the Black Widow,” I shout, my voice echoing around the empty hallway.

A cold, calculating look descends into his eyes. “That’s a very serious accusation.”

My fingers squeeze hard.

“There are cameras here,” he says in a strained voice. “You won’t get out of trouble this time. I’ll have the necessary evidence to prove you attacked me.”

My fingers itch to flex harder. Would it be so bad if I broke his neck and killed him right this moment?

If you do that, he’ll become a victim and you’ll be labeled a murderer, a cold voice whispers in my mind.People will never know what he’s done to you and the countless people he’s killed.

Breathing hard, I loosen my hold on him. Forcing a smile, I say, “Excuse me, Sir. I thought I saw aspideron your neck. Just protecting you from its venomous bite.” Stepping back, I brush at his shoulders, pretending to swipe away invisible insects.

Fury pools into those black orbs. The mention of a spider seems to have hit a nerve.

“You don’t have a single proof against me,” he says with a sneer.

I think about the list of things we’ve uncovered about him.

At this very moment, Fort Callahan is teeming with his men who’re masquerading as soldiers in fake uniforms. Julian has also unearthed evidence that links his family to the Order of the Lost Sanctum. Not only that, we’re convinced of his role in the death of Iris’s parents.

Callahan has no idea but we’ve already gathered a good amount of evidence against him. However, I can’t let him know too much about what we’re up to.
