I nod. “I ran background searches on her dad as well. It’s interesting to note that Callahan had been one of his closest friends.”
“What?” His eyes widen with shock.
“Callahan has been planning a rebellion for a long, long time,” I say. “He got close to the Burton family, entered the military, and secured a position that would allow him to suppress information on the Black Widow’s movements.”
Raiden shakes his head. “Let me get this straight,” he says in a voice that rises with every word. “Callahan pretended to be Iris’s dad’s friend, lusted after his mate, and finally ended up killing them both?”
I nod. “He used the Black Widow to attack them.”
“This is so fucked up!” he shouts, pounding his fist on the table.
A gasp escapes me as the wooden panel under the desk shatters into pieces. My keyboard clatters to the floor along with the debris, making me jump away.
“Shit! Calm down, Ray!”
Rage swirls in his eyes. “Don’t tell me to calm down. How the hell is that asswipe still roaming free?” Getting to his feet, he kicks at his chair, sending it flying across the room. “This is the reason Iris is in so much pain. She feels helpless against him. She has all of us at her side and we’re all fucking useless to her!”
I haul myself to my feet and grab his arm before he can cause further damage to the room. “Will you shut up?” I hiss. “No one knows about this stuff yet. Even Iris isn’t aware of everything. We can’t let anyone know about this information until we’ve gathered enough evidence to charge Callahan.”
“To hell with evidence!”
“Iris needs us to do this for her,” I say in a strict tone. “She can’t take him down on her own. We’ve got to be smarter than him, so stop losing your fucking shit.”
Raiden quiets down but he’s panting hard.
“We’re the only ones who know the truth about Callahan,” I say in a grim tone. “It’s our responsibility to bring his crimes to light so we can bring justice to the hundreds of innocent people who’ve lost their lives to him.”
“How did Iris come to be with the Collins?” he asks in a subdued tone.
“No idea,” I say with a sigh. “They’re the only ones who can answer that question.”
“Do you think they work for Callahan?”
“Obviously, not,” I say. “If they did, they’d have handed her over to him a long time ago.”
“How about we go back to that abandoned manor?” Raiden says. “I’m sure we’ll find some clues there.”
I stare at him. “Are you crazy? Callahan knows you know the truth about him now. He’ll not leave the place unguarded anymore.”
“How about we spy from a distance?” His gaze is heavy with mischief.
“You want to use my Dragonfly?”
He gestures toward the windows. “It’s a nice day to be out.”
“DoIget to be out?”
“Yep.”
Excitement shoots through me. I can’t believe he’s actually asking me to go spying with him. I’m suddenly glad of the special miniature-sized drone that I nicknamed Dragonfly.
“What about Iris?” I ask.
“I don’t want to get her hopes up until we’ve found something concrete.”
“That’s a good idea.”
“If she misses us, just tell her you bullied me into taking you out shopping or something.”
