I wait with bated breath as they both dig into their food.
“Mmhmm,” Julian makes a familiar noise and I feel my heart lifting. That’s the sound he makes when he’s eating something he loves.
“I need more syrup,” says Raiden, reaching for the white porcelain pot. “It’s not too sweet, but packed with flavor.”
“Sit next to me,” says Julian, pulling out the chair beside him. “Let’s eat together.”
I nod and sit down.
Soon, the kitchen is filled with the sound of clinking metal against porcelain as we dig into our breakfast. A comfortable silence falls over us as we devour the delicious spread before us.
Raiden lets out a loud, exaggerated sigh as he leans back in his chair. He looks thoroughly relaxed and stares at me with an affectionate gaze. “Have I ever told you how wonderful you are?”
“I tell her that every day,” Julian boasts, pressing a wet kiss to my cheek.
“Why don’t you ever say it to me, Jules?” Raiden quips back. “Do you have any idea how that makes me feel?”
Julian shrugs. “Feed me food like this every day and maybe I’ll reconsider,” he drawls and sticks his tongue out.
Warmth spreads through me. I grin, enjoying the way they’re pulling each other’s legs.
It’d be so good if Caleb and Damon could join us too. I miss them both so much and seeing them fleetingly doesn’t help at all.
“Are you staying home today?” Julian asks.
“Yeah,” says Raiden. “I thought I’d catch up on some paperback.”
“How about you take me out today?” Julian says, drawing patterns on the back of Raiden’s hand. “I’m so bored of staying here all the time.”
“It’s not safe,” Raiden says immediately. “We’re being watched.”
“Yeah, but you’re going to be there,” Julian argues back.
Raiden shakes his head. “Not a good time, babe.”
“Please,” Julian whines.
“No,” Raiden says firmly. “I’m sorry, Jules. I promise we’ll go out and hang out like old times when things have cooled down. Hell! We’ll even go on a vacation. All of us. Just be patient until we’ve figured out how to eliminate the threat.”
“There will always be some kind of threat,” Julian says with a pout.
“Raiden’s right,” I say.
Julian’s eyes widen a fraction. He stares at me like he’s seeing me for the first time.
“You haven’t recovered from your injuries,” I say in a grim tone. “We’re both useless in a fight with an alpha. How about we use this time to train ourselves?”
Julian exchanges a glance with Raiden. “What is she talking about?” he asks.
“I promised to help her train.”
“Let’s not laze around,” I say, meeting Julian’s gaze. “We need to get stronger too.”
“You could’ve asked me for help,” Julian says. “I can train you too. Just wait for me to get better and I’ll happily drill you.”
“He offered first,” I say, flashing a grin at Raiden. Taking a deep breath, I broach the subject that’s been pricking at me for days. “There’s something I wanted to ask you guys about.”
“Sure,” says Raiden.
