“I can’t believe you got lunch ready in the time it took to make coffee,” he says, eyeing the package I set on the table. “Do you know magic or something?”
A chuckle escapes me as I plate up sandwiches for him to eat with his coffee.
“I used to work at a restaurant, remember?” I say, grinning. “I’m used to being quick with food.”
A grim look comes over him. “Do you miss your old life?”
I go quiet, considering the answer. “I miss the simplicity of my old life,” I say, deciding to be honest. “Things were incredibly hard but I truly believed I was loved by my family. I was kind of an idiot, huh?”
“I’ll never stop feeling guilty about the way I lashed out at you during our first meeting,” he says in a grim tone. “You had nothing to do with what your parents did. I should’ve never forced you to stay here. Do you know what makes me feel guiltier, though?”
“What?”
“I don’t ever want to let you go,” he says in a quiet voice. “I can send you far away to hide you from Callahan. You’ll be safer that way, but I can’t ever let go of you.”
“Thank fuck for that.”
Surprise flickers through his face, making me chuckle.
“Stop feeling guilty,” I say, grinning. “There’s no way I’m going anywhere. Julian’s my soulmate and the only way to make me leave him is to kill me.”
“Ahh!” He feigns being pierced by an arrow through the heart. Holding his hand against his chest, he says, “You forgot you have three other soulmates.”
My cheeks burn so hot, I have to look down to hide my reaction from him.
Caleb and his brothers are the hottest alphas I’ve laid eyes on. Deep inside, it’s still hard for me to believe they’re my fated mates.
I feel a gentle finger hooking under my chin. Looking up, I see Caleb leaning across the table. “You belong to me too,” he says in a deep voice that rumbles through me.
The intensity shimmering in his silvery eyes makes my heart pound harder.
“Say it,” he suddenly demands.
“Huh?” This close to him, I’m stunned by the sheer beauty of his face.
“Say you’re mine.”
“Yours,” I repeat, still feeling completely dazed as I gaze into his eyes.
A satisfied look crosses his face. Leaning further in, he captures my lips in a searing kiss.
The scent of rain and lush earth wafts into my nostrils. His velvety tongue tangles with mine, lighting a fire in my core.
I have no idea how long I’m locked in the kiss but when he breaks away, I’m completely breathless. My heart races in my chest and it’s a struggle to draw in enough air to clear the haze from my mind.
“Thanks for lunch,” he says, picking up the parcel of food from the table.
“Uhh, yeah, sure,” I blurt like an idiot who’s forgotten to speak.
He grins, knowing the effect he’s having on me.
A groan escapes me as he hurries out of the kitchen with his coat. Placing my head on the table, I blow out a breath. Why do I have to be such a dork all the time?
I almost allow myself to wallow in my misery when a sudden thought strikes me.
Since it’s still too early to wake up Julian, I can use the time to get in some exercise and practice some taekwondo sequences. A surge of quiet energy rushes through me at the idea.
I run upstairs to reach the attic.
