Unable to hold back, I throw my arms around him. “You were absolutely wonderful,” I say against his ear while giving him the tightest hug I can manage.

“Really?” he asks, caressing my back with a gentle hand.

Pecking his cheek, I sit back and stare at him. “You don’t have to worry about me. I’m not as fragile as you think.”

He exhales another heavy breath, not looking fully convinced.

“Come on, I’ll make you some breakfast,” I say, climbing off the bed. “I’ll also pack you some lunch.”

“Wait,” he says, holding onto my wrist. “I won’t have more than half an hour to spare. I’m sorry, darling. Besides, you should be resting.”

I could’ve never imagined Caleb to be the sweetest among his brothers. Reaching out, I move away a dark strand away from his eyes.

“Half an hour’s fine too,” I say with a grin. “Get dressed and come into the kitchen.”

“Iris, you don’t need to do anything.”

I chuckle. He’s the leader of one of the most powerful packs in the country but he can turn into such a nagging sweetheart. “I’m fine.Honestly.”

He finally loosens his hold on my wrist and allows me to sprint out of the room.

I hurry inside the kitchen and find it a mess. Neither of us bothered cleaning up after things got heated last night.

Ignoring the mess on the table, I move toward the fridge.

Since there’s barely much time to spare, I put some eggs to boil and start making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

Most people don’t think much of the humble PBJ but they’re amazingly filling and satisfying. They kept me going on most days when I’d be swamped with my multiple jobs.

Caleb enters the kitchen after ten minutes.

“Shit, I forgot to clean in here,” he says the moment he steps in.

“I’ll take care of it,” I say, continuing to build up more sandwiches.

“Nah, I’ll clean up and make coffee,” he says, moving forward to pick up the dirty dishes on the table. He carries them to the sink and switches on the coffee machine.

“Don’t wash anything now,” I say, glancing toward him. “You just got dressed.”

“It’s fine.”

“Please, Caleb,” I say, moving toward him and pulling him away from the sink. “Just relax and give me a chance to take care of you. You’ll be working throughout the day and maybe the night too. You deserve a little break.”

Warmth pools into his silvery eyes as a smile lifts the corners of his lips. “Thanks for worrying about me,” he says, pulling me into a hug. “You have no idea how relaxed I feel to simply have you back home.”

“I’m worried about Julian though.”

“He’s going to get better,” Caleb says, caressing my back. “His injuries are bad but not fatal. I’m not too worried about him.” He chuckles and glances at me with twinkling eyes. “Don’t tell him, though.”

I chuckle, knowing how much our mate loves being the center of attention.

“All right, you grab the coffee, then,” I say, stepping back. “I’ll pack up your lunch.”

“On it!”

The kitchen soon fills with the aroma of freshly-brewed coffee.

I inhale deeply, packing up the sandwiches. Next, I fill a bag with baby carrots and a couple of boiled eggs. It’s not fancy but the simple meal will keep him full and energized throughout the day.
