“What makes you say this?” Caleb asks.
“He confessed to me,” she explains. “Callahan came in with two choppers. He hid one on the roof of the house while the other was attacking our soldiers. When Damon left to help, Callahan entered the house to look for me. He found Julian first and nearly killed him.”
Her voice chokes up. Tears pool in her eyes as she gazes at me. Swallowing hard, she continues. “I was his target. He staged the attack to distract you guys.”
Iris’s explanation sounds logical and precise as she recounts the events of that horrific night. I hate Nox Callahan but it’s still hard to wrap my head around the fact that he’s the leader of the Black Widow.
“That would explain the man with the tattoo,” says Raiden, glancing at Caleb.
“What man?” I ask.
“We found a man loitering around the chopper that was stationed outside Fort Callahan,” says Caleb. “He wore the Black Widow’s tattoo.”
“Hold on,” I say. “You guys went to Fort Callahan? Also, the asshole owns a fucking fort?”
“We found the place where Iris was being kept,” says Caleb. “Also, it’s not an operative fort.”
“Yeah,” says Raiden. “It’s an ancient, abandoned building. I doubt anyone lives there.”
“What happened to Callahan after you guys got me out of there?” Iris asks, looking anxious. “I was in so much pain, my memories are a hazy mess. I don’t remember much besides being in a car with Raiden.”
“No idea,” says Caleb, running his fingers through his dark locks. “I left him bleeding and half dead. We didn’t waste any time bothering with him. We grabbed you and got the hell out of there.”
“The bastard’s alive though,” Raiden hisses. “He’s made attempts to kidnap you from the clinic. At first, I thought the Black Widow is targeting me, but if Callahan is involved, he probably sent those men to bring you back to him.”
An icy chill spreads down my spine.
Neither Caleb nor Damon told me anything about what happened. I’m slowly beginning to understand the events that unfolded after I lost consciousness.
My mind churns as I listen to them talking.
Nox Callahan has turned out to be even more dangerous than I could’ve imagined. His obsession with Iris is bordering on psychotic. He should’ve been hiding and laying low after they found Iris. Instead, he’s recklessly continuing to track her.
How could I have not known any of this?
Frustration, anxiety, and anger kick up a storm inside me. “What the fuck are you guys talking about?” I suddenly burst, my gaze swinging between Caleb and Damon. “What the hell did that turd face do to her that she had to spend the past two days in a clinic? What the hell has been happening here?”
Iris looks toward Raiden with a lost expression.
“He doesn’t know anything,” Raiden replies with a cringe. Glancing toward me, he attempts a smile. “We were going to tell you everything.”
“You guys had over two fucking days to tell me!” I bellow. Every inch of my body hurts, adding to my anger. Picking up a bowl, I chuck it straight at Caleb.
To my disappointment, he’s quick enough to dodge it. The bowl clatters to the floor, splattering the tiles with scrambled eggs.
“Oi!” Damon shouts. “I made that for Iris!”
“You!” I retaliate, pointing an accusing finger at Damon. “You didn’t tell me anything either!”
“Jules, calm down,” Caleb says, moving closer to me. “We didn’t want to worry you.”
“Ha!” I shout with a humorless laugh. “You didn’t want me to worry? How else was I supposed to feel when Iris didn’t come home for two days? You guys refused to tell me anything about her. I stayed quiet because you were both under a lot of stress. But this...” I shake my head and grab at my hair. “This is betrayal.”
“Jules.” There’s a pathetic whine in Caleb’s voice. “I’m sorry for not telling you. The doc said you needed plenty of rest to recuperate. We didn’t want to stress you out.”
Guilt settles onto Damon and Raiden’s faces as well.
“We’re sorry,” Raiden adds, letting out a frustrated huff. “Everything’s been such a mess these past few days. We wanted to protect you from it all.”
