“Make the call,” Iris says, glancing toward Raiden.
“Huh? Oh, yeah...” Raiden scrambles to dial the most recently dialed number in Callahan’s call log. He puts the phone on speaker and steps closer to Callahan and Iris.
“Yes, Master,” a strange male voice answers the call.
“Get out of the school,” Callahan spits out. “Don’t kill or harm any of the children.”
There’s a short pause. “Are you sure, Master?”
“Yes!” Callahan shouts, glaring at Iris. “Fucking do what I asked you to. Get the fuck out of there right now.”
Raiden switches off the call.
“Check the news sites,” Iris says, stepping away from Callahan. “We’ll keep him here until we’re sure the kids are safe.”
The bastard writhes against the chains and screams curses but we ignore him.
Julian gets his phone out and checks into a local news site that’s doing a live coverage of the hostage situation. Peering over his shoulder, I watch the clips being played on the screen.
Cop cars and military vehicles line the street outside the school premises. Armed men patrol the area while groups of paramedics watch on with anxious looks.
“It’s a good thing they’ve cleared the area,” I say, noting the absence of civilians in the immediate vicinity of the school. “Maybe they’ll be able to capture the men when they try to escape the place.”
“Let’s wait and watch,” says Raiden.
The four of us gather in the corner of the cell and watch the phone’s screen with bated breaths.
Thick banners with headlines scroll down the screen, repeating the same news about the school being hijacked. My frustration intensifies and it takes sheer will not to go ahead and pound Callahan until he’s fucking dead.
Almost an hour crawls by until we see a change in the footage that’s being played. Gunshots and bomb blasts echo around the room as the cellphone plays a different scene.
The school premises are now covered in smoke and rising dust. We see glimpses of armed men running forward with their guns.
My heart pounds against my chest as I watch on.
After fifteen excruciating minutes, we finally see at least a dozen men being brought out by the authorities. The silver spider sewn onto their black outfits is easily visible for the world to see.
“I wish they’d tell us whether the kids are safe,” says Iris, looking terribly anxious.
“Do you see those guys?” Raiden says, pointing to a group of uniformed officers that are storming through the school gates. “They’re going in to search and investigate. We’ll know about the situation soon.”
I’m barely able to breathe. There’s always a chance that a few attackers remained behind to attack the police and SWAT teams.
“The news has changed!” Julian excitedly shouts, pointing at the banner of text that’s scrolling along the screen. “The kids are safe! They’ve captured all the terrorists! Everyone’s safe!”
My breath whooshes out of me. Iris slumps against the wall, breathing hard. Raiden and Julian hug each other tightly.
Pure joy and ecstasy course through me as I re-read the news.
“We did it!” Iris shouts, jumping at me and throwing her arms around my neck.
Wrapping my arms around her, I almost lift her off the ground as I hug her back and capture her lips.
My phone starts vibrating in my pocket.
I feel annoyed at the interruption but still lower Iris to her feet and grab my phone. Caleb’s name flashes across the screen.
“Hey,” I say breathlessly.
