“I get to ride with you, Daddy?”
“Always,” Jace said tenderly, pulling her to his side and hugging her. “You’re my favorite co-pilot, remember?”
Matthew smiled, glancing at Jana and then his son.
“We’ll be back in a little while,” he offered, leaning forward to kiss her. She cradled his head to hers, not wanting the kiss to end, before gently nipping at his lower lip causing his eyes to melt as he laughed softly, blushing.
“I love you, flyboy…” she breathed intimately.
“I gotta be able to focus, darling,” Matthew whispered, rubbing his nose against hers. “There’s precious cargo on the plane today.”
“It’s every time you fly, handsome,” she countered, tapping lightly on his chest.
His son went everywhere with him and he tried to be the best father possible to Julian. They played catch in the yard, went fishing together, went camping together… and Jana sometimes felt like she was just along for the ride, but wouldn’t trade it for the world.
She knew Matthew needed this bond with his son, because it filled a hole in his heart where he’d missed time with his own father.
“Julian,” Jana said, not moving away from where Matthew held her in his arms lovingly. “You take care of your Daddy while you are up there and do exactly what he says, okay? I’m trusting you with my heart.”
“I’ve got your back, Momma,” Julian said, giving a terrible salute… but he looked so much like his gorgeous father in that moment that it made her heart clench wildly in her chest.
Someday, he was going to break hearts, she thought proudly, seeing her husband’s tender gaze look at her knowingly, as if he understood what she was thinking – and nodded.
“Time to go,” he breathed, dropping another kiss on her lips, before stepping away from her. He held out his hand to his son, before turning to walk towards the plane with Julian.
They cut a fine figure together, father and son, making her immediately raise her phone to capture this moment. She loved her life, her world, and her family so much… ever since that first unexpected meeting where the mysterious Vapor had swept her off her feet and into his arms.
“I love you, flyboys!” she called out, waving proudly.
