“I’m not sure. Roberts is here.” Mercy was staring up at him in concern, but he didn’t know how to reassure her.
He didn’t even know what the hell was going on.
“He’s coming up here.”
“What is going on?” his grandmother asked, looking between them.
“I think the girl was a seer,” Mercy whispered as Eleanor frowned, but she didn’t look surprised.
“You had a feeling?” he asked, and Eleanor nodded.
“It was just a feeling.” Eleanor shrugged, but they both knew her feelings were often more than that.
Mercy was quietly watching them, and he tried to smile at her, but he knew it fell flat when she just looked more worriedly at him.
“Hey,” Roberts said as he walked in, a thundering frown on his face, and his back immediately went up as he openly glared at Mercy.
“What’s wrong?”
Roberts sighed deeply, running a hand through his hair before looking up at them.
“The autopsy is finished. She was…”
“Pregnant,” Mercy finished, and they all fell silent. She struggled to sit up, so he helped her, not letting her get farther than his arms would reach before he pulled her between his legs so that he could sit behind her.
“Save her,” she whispered, staring at him, but she wasn’t really seeing him. He could see her mind working.
“What are you thinking, little one?”
“She said save her.”
What was it about those words that felt wrong?
“Her. Not me,” Eleanor whispered, and Mercy’s horrified gaze flew to his.
“Her baby,” they both whispered at the same time.
Roberts cursed and flew out of the room as he wrapped his arms around Mercy and pulled her back into him. It wasn’t seconds later that Mercy started sobbing as Eleanor quietly slipped out.
He hated to hear her cry, but he knew she needed this, so he didn’t stop her. He simply held her and gave her his strength, never more grateful that she was there and alive.
After all, it could have all ended much worse.
Mercy
Later that night, after she had been discharged from the hospital, and as they lay tangled in his bed, the phone rang.
She sat up and watched in both sickening anticipation as Garrett answered it, said only a few words, then hung up and turned to her.
He pulled her up on his chest so that her nose was level with hers, and her heart started to clench, as she prepared herself for the worst.
“They saved the baby,” he whispered, and she smiled.

Mercy
“Iwanttotakeyou somewhere,” he whispered while he was still inside of her, slowly gliding in and out, and she giggled.
